UNC-Chapel Hill, UVa, UMD, UMich, Cornell--confused and stressed, thank you!

Hi everyone! I'm applying to UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, University of Maryland-College Park, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Cornell. My top choice is UNC (not really counting on Cornell), but its out-of-state acceptance rate is 15%. If you can only chance me for one school, please do UNC! I'll be out-of-state for all of the schools.

-White female
-Major: biology
-ACT: 33
-SAT II Math 2: 730
-SAT II Bio: 780
-SAT: 2060 (won't send it if I don't have to)
-AP Calc BC 3, AP Bio 4, AP Environmental Science 4, AP Language 5.
-Senior Courses: Behavioral science, political radicalism, AP comp sci, AP physics, materials science, AP lit, AP french.

Sports: Ran XC 2 years (knee injury, had to quit--against my will)
Volunteer: 430 hours at Columbus Zoo-animal husbandry, customer service, diets, etc.
Clubs: 4-H (been to States multiple times, won many awards for Reptiles and Insects), Community Service Club, NHS
Other ECs: Been to State Science Fair 3 times, won a $15k/yr scholarship for Ohio Wesleyan, did a mosquito research project at an entomology lab at Ohio State, worked at a bakery in summer, attended a month-long field studies trip out West (got a credit), planned and executed my own Ohio field studies trip, present educational reptile shows for schools and neighborhoods.
Essays: Should be very good, most are already written, 9/10.
Recs: Awesome recs. I'll have 2 from teachers who know me well, 1 from a counselor. Should I get one more from a teacher that didn't teach me (knows me from the field studies trips) or a Zoo adviser or both?

Thanks everyone! Not expecting Cornell, it's a reach. UNC, UVa are also reaches. Are UMD and UMich matches? My safeties are Purdue, OSU, and Ohio Wesleyan. Thank you so much!

UMich is as good if not better than UVa. I’d say UNC will be 50/50. Just write a really good essay

Thanks, so UMich is a reach as well then. Thanks for UNC! Forgot about GPA.

Unweighted: 3.99 (one B sophomore year)
Weighted: 4.16

I think UNC is a reach but your field science stuff may help. My daughter (from Ohio) got rejected with a 4.0 unweighted and a 4.5 weighted and a ACT 34. She had many academic and sports EC’s. State level 4 year varsity. Chemistry tutor, worked since she was 14, writing tutor and many volunteer leadership roles. My point is - it is REALLY hard to get into UNC OOS. I think uMD and UM -ypu should have a better chance. Goodluck.

Ooh wow, that’s rough. Thanks though!

You’ve got good stats. The ACT can be risen to a 34 or 35 if you have time. SAT Math 2 is a little weak considering many people have 750+ at these schools. It’s a bummer you’re out of state for all of them. Anyways, here are my predictions:
Cornell-Reach (Use the two choice option when you apply. Select CALS and CAS as you’re schools; you have a better chance at getting into the University)
UNC-Reach (Very few OOS are accepted)
UVA-Low Reach (Less strict on OOS than UNC)
UMD-Safety (OOS are actually very welcomed there and it isn’t too difficult to get in with your stats)
UMich-Match
Purdue-Match/Safety
Ohio-Safety
Ohio Wesleyan-Safety? (Not too familiar with this school)

Chance me back please: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1675633-chance-for-cornell-columbia-upenn-johns-hopkins-and-more-will-chance-back.html#latest

For UMich, it would be a high match for LSA and a low reach for CoE for you as oos.

I agree that U.Michigan is close to a match. However, remember that UM is very expensive for OOS students and does not give good financial aid.

Thank you everyone! Yeah, I would need a lot of financial aid, especially at UMich. UVa and UNC are very good with financial aid, and if I get into UNC I’d get a full ride based on my mom’s salary. I would be doing LSA in UMich, not CoE. I did just write their second essay though, and it was pretty good (I think).

For my 4-H club, I’ve been a vice president for 2 years. My “passion” is animals (biology), so I’m trying to show my dedication to bio/enviro with the Zoo, 4-H, science fair, and field studies trips. For me it’s insects and reptiles, does that make me “stand out”?

If you are from a very low income family, you may still get a lot of aids from UMich even as oos. Note that your stat is not going to get you any merit aid though.
