UNC Chapel Hill vs GA Tech

Hello! I am having a hard time in choosing between these two wonderful universities. Both are great institutions, but I am worried that UNC is too large and GA tech is too difficult/non supportive (as I have heard, they hold a sink or swim mentality). I am from Atlanta Ga-I actually live like 15 mins from the school. When it comes to price, UNC is about 30k while Tech is 17k (without the Zell, it is about 27k). Also, my parents both went to UNC. If it matters at all, I am completely undecided but really want to study abroad. Thank you!

This is an interesting mix of schools, as UNC and Georgia Tech are vastly different.
If you’re not interested in STEM, UNC likely better fits your goals.

Have you checked out Georgia Tech Lorraine?

GT in-state is a great value. What do you want to major in?

If you search my posts I have written a lot about how supportive Georgia Tech has been for my DD who is finishing her second year there. Her friends have found Georgia Tech equally supportive. I have students at several colleges and Georgia Tech beats the in terms of support. Plus it is one of the engineering schools that gives you the full college experience- football games, greek system, traditions etc. GT has an extensive study-abroad program including engineering so you don’t fall behind when you go abroad. My DD went to China last summer, her friends are gong to Oxford, Ireland, and Budapest this summer.

I also think you are way off in the cost at UNC. It is more like $51K and with your Zell Miller scholarship GT is a bargain. Here is the COA from UNC’s website “For the 2016-2017 academic year, the total cost of full-time attendance for undergraduates is estimated to be $24,898 for North Carolina residents and $51,466 for out-of-state residents”

What do you want to major in?

GT has limited options in humanities and social studies. UNC-CH does not have any ABET-accredited engineering majors.

Thank you for answering everyone! The thing is-I truely don’t know what I want to major in (although I’m leaning towards business or international affairs). Itsv, I might be wrong for some people, but with financial aid/scholarships, that is what UNC costs for me
