UNC-Chapel Hill vs. George Washington Univ.

My S asked me to put this in the forum to see what feedback he gets regarding his decision between UNC and GW. He currently wants to major in Political Science or Public Policy and is interested in various aspects of each school and how others compare these schools. We are IS for UNC and finances are not too much of an issue since GW has come through with a very nice FA package.

Decisions, decisions. Perhaps some of you may have the same decision. Help him out here is you have any input.

I'll also post this on the GW forum.

Thanks.

UNC for the classic undergrad experience. Poli Sci is a major that any and every college does well.

GW does offer local internships, I assume?

Have you visited GW? (Many are turned off by its lack of campus.)

if she really wants a true college experience-NC is the place for her

GW is known for its poli sci major-plus your in D.C and can get an internship places from cnn to the white house.

Unc All The Way

Definitely UNC. It's an awesome place that offers a great college experience that outweighs the benefits of getting a polisci education in DC. If GW actually had a campus, I might say otherwise.

If cost is not a factor, I would choose GW. Public policy is one of the school's major strengths. Also, I think it's nice to get away from one's home state for college, if it is financially feasible. There are students from all over the world at GW. Your education is not only in the classroom. GW is a great overall learning experience.

GW is much, much too expensive. As a former resident of DC and NoVA I always felt that GW was a real estate firm masquerading as a university.

UNC gets my vote

Thanks for the inputs thus far. Fianances ae not an issue since GW came through with very good FA and UNC is IS for us as well as offering scholarships.

UNC without a doubt.

1) UNC is better than GW in Political Science (#13 vs #41) and just as good in Public Policy (both are tied at #14). Unless your son is interested in International Relations and wants to work while studying, UNC is the place to go.

2) UNC has a much nicer campus (GWU doesn't really have much of a campus), a more traditional college feel

3) UNC has a greater national and international reputation

4) Chapel Hill is a funner, more intellectual and safer college town than DC

5) UNC has awesome school spirit and great Basketball

You get a fuller college experience at UNC. If he is already interested in becoming a fully responsible adult focused on establishing a career than perhaps GWU would allow him to get a jump on that, but not by much. If he still wants to explore his options and still be a college student in a college environment, then UNC wins hands down. Personally, I would choose UNC it is one of the most underrated universities in the country.
