UNC-Chapel Hill vs. U Maryland-College Park

I was accepted to both of these schools (in state for UNC), got into honors at UM-CP and a small scholarship. I'm trying to decide which one to accept, so if anyone has advice, please share! I like both of them, I know UNC is a better school but its really close to home and I wanted to get away, and UM-CP is a change of surroundings. Also, i'll probably major in biology. I posted this thread in the UM-CP forum too. Thanks!

these life changing decisions are always a pain to make

UNC is a great school for premed, prelaw, journalism, poli sci and psyc(cause i'm a psyc major and its cool :) .

i really can't make your decision for you but I can try and point out some things that might help.
1) first off the price is a huge bargain, you get a great education at one of the best public universities in the country for a real deal.
2) you mentioned location to home, how close to home is it? sometimes its pretty nice to live near home. remember your still going to live on campus and you still be just as independent as most other collge students. I can talk more about this if i knew where u lived in proximity to campus.
3) great athletics. free admittance to football games and free tickets to see the nations #1 basketball team, you just can't beat that. We don't just have a great varsity program, we have a very good sports club program here too. I run club track and cross country and its great.
4) we have such a beautiful campus, but i'm sure you already know that
5) why would u want to go to a school with a bunch of dumb turtles, turtles can't play basketball.

carolina's a great school and I'm sure you'd love it and be happier here, but i guess maryland is ok.

To add to the list of great programs at UNC, the business school is very very good. Top 4 programs at UNC in my opinion: business, journalism, english, and pre-med.

I don't know a whole lot about Maryland, and I'm sure you'll do well there, but UNC in-state is an amazing opportunity to get a world-class education for a very low price. I know your feeling on getting away from home (I'm from Colorado), but most in-state students go home about as often as I do, which isn't very much, so I wouldn't worry about that. I would visit both and see where you feel more comfortable. Check out the other threads for some other things that I and some other current students and parents of students have written. Hopefully that will also help give you a better since of how much we love Carolina! Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely take all of that into account. I really do like UNC, the one turn off is that a ton of people at my high school go there so I feel like it won't be anything new...although I know its a huge school. Btw, I live in Wake County so it's pretty close by.

UNC is too good an opportunity to pass up in state, especially for MAryland. NC!!
