UNC Chapel Hill vs. Vanderbilt

Hi! I was recently accepted into Vanderbilt, but I also received a full ride to Chapel Hill as a Scholar. I visited Vanderbilt and stayed with a host there and I absolutely love it, but I haven't really seen much of Chapel Hill to compare. I know UNC doesn't really have an overnight program, so I was wondering if anyone could provide some input on the student life/ academic life/ social scene/ nightlife/ sorority/ research/ internship aspect at UNC Chapel Hill. I'm also a bit concerned about the 85 percent of North Carolinians at UNC and the 60/40 girl/guy ratio. I actually really like Chapel Hill; that's why I applied.... these are the only concerns I have with the college. Also, I want to major in journalism and maybe minor in studio art so if anyone has direct experience with these programs, I'd like your input as well. Thanks! If anyone responds to this, that'd be awesome :)

How on earth did you hear from Vandy already?

I got mine early?? They invited some kids for recruitment so I guess we got ours earlier…

Well, the journalism program at Carolina is very respected and well known, people come out of it with jobs at Bloomberg and such. I don’t know where you are from, but there is an easiness to the south, and warmth. So either school is going to have that. Carolina is a like a small city, and every kid I know that goes there loves it.

The 85% Carolinians figure can be misleading. North Carolina has experienced rapid growth from people from other states moving here. I moved here 3 years ago and most people I met locally were not born in NC. Based on that, I suspect that a lot of your fellow students will be transplants from other states. At least my daughter will be.

Based on Scholarship Day (you were probably at the same one I was), it appears that a Carolina Scholar could have some amazing opportunities.

As for the 60/40 ratio, unless you go to a STEM type school, females will generally outnumber the males. Today more females attend college than male.

I forgot. Congratulates on getting a full ride as a OOS. Impressive!

Thanks! And this alleviates my concerns a little bit :)

I would agree, not overly thrilled w 85% form NC, but you are in the research triangle and that brings in tons of transfers from other states bc of employment. However, you won’t have much opportunity to " go home" to numerous states during breaks w your new friends bc they do still live in N C.

Congrats on your amazing scholarship!, do you mind if I ask what you received on the SAT, just curious.

85% is a bit misleading, but the vast majority of people here did grow up in North Carolina. It’s not a haven of diversity. And those who moved to NC aged 12 are as much North Carolinians as they are from their home states.

But the Journalism program at UNC-CH is tip top.

@bagirl24 It’s totally fine! I got a 2130 on my SAT, but I’m pretty sure my essay is what made me a competitive candidate for the scholarship.
