UNC class of 2019 EA thread

NC resident SAT 2280, ACT 33 and grade 3.8 (Weighted 4.625), 320 volunteering hours and 3 summers of robotics camp and several clubs got rejected. Any idea why?

I would call the office of admissions and ask. I’m not positive unc offers this but I know when I was deferred from another school they told me exactly why.
Great stats and I’m sorry about the rejection- must be something crazy

unbelievable that someone with a 1670 sat got accepted and one with a 2280 did not! WTH?

ZBD5421 - I’m not sure it’s been confirmed that any OOS applicants have received the “Excel” email invite. A lot of instate applicants have. Anyone?

Likewise, it doesn’t appear any instate applicants have received acceptance into Honors, or an invitation to scholarship day. Several OOS applicants have received both, however. Anyone?

There’s conjecture the instate Honors/Scholarship invites may go out today or tomorrow.

@blueeyes1997 I got accepted to Boston College, Northeastern, NC State, Maryland, and a few other safety schools like bing and Stony Brook, wbu?

@LI516IT I applied to Boston College, UVA, Colgate and Villanova… Have only heard back from safety schools so far! I applied to SUNY Geneseo as a safety, and my mom is an alum haha

@Baba2015 sorry to hear that and I too find it difficult to understand. I know I would be calling for further details and I know with some schools there is an appeal process. Unless there were some issues with recommendation letters or essays they may have just made a mistake. I can imagine with all these notifications that it is not beyond the realm of reality that they get things mixed up. Can’t hurt to try but know you must be disappointed.

yes @Baba2015, do call and inquire. Those are great stats! Also being in state should be automatic.

Mistakes do happen, I was just told about someone being rejected at NC State, but then found out the wrong transcript was sent and no one caught it.

@Baba2015 I was rejected in state with a 2150 SAT score, a 730 MA2 score, and 720 PH score. I think that an explanation for my case is the fact that I never took a US History class and was home schooled. It’s quite possible that you simply lacked a requirement.

UNC is like a factory that has a quota to fill; capability/merit doesn’t matter unless you fit into a niche.

I’m fine with it though. My brother is attending and doesn’t really care for his colleagues (they tend to drink and party a lot) and the amount of busywork that is assigned.

Yes, @Proboscis you need US History.

To be considered for first-year admission, all applicants graduating from high school after the summer of 2006 should present these minimum high school (including the ninth grade) course requirements:

Four units of English

Four units of college preparatory mathematics (two algebra, one geometry, and a higher-level mathematics course for which algebra II is a prerequisite)

At least two units of a single foreign language

Three units in science, including at least one unit in a life or biological science and at least one unit in a physical science, and including at least one laboratory course

Two units of social science, including United States history, and

Enough elective units in traditional academic areas (literature, mathematics, physical and biological sciences, social sciences, and foreign languages) for a total of 16 units

Yep, that accounts for it. It’s humorous in my view how something as trifling as a US History class can result in rejection, especially when what I want to study has nothing to do with it.

And I even offered to take the US History subject test to prove that, despite not taking a class, I know a great deal about the subject. I didn’t because communication is one-way and I thought my other scores would be sufficient.

If the history does account for it perhaps you can take a summer course at the local community college and reapply for the spring semester. And BTW I don’t think you are going to find too many colleges (except maybe Brigham Young and the military academies) that are going to be free of drinking and parties. It’s something that most parents (including me) worry about but hope that we have instilled enough common sense into our kids to stay out of trouble.

@nomorenails Thanks for the advice. I’ll likely attend a small liberal arts college (one with more open admissions criteria) or an overseas university. With regard to drinking, you’re certainly right and my remarks were unwarranted.

If anyone hears about events or scholarships please post them here!!

@Proboscis in case you are interested. NC just implemented a new program called Credit Through Demonstrated Knowledge (CDM). Basically you take a test to show your knowledge in the subject and you receive a P for pass and credit for the class.

Here is some information.

@proboscis Understand and worry myself as I said. Always happy to see that the schools my daughter is looking at generally don’t fall on the top party school list. Plus when I was at school (back in the dark ages haha) there wasn’t the binge drinking or the roofies to worry about. Good luck to you in whatever you decide.

@Joe2015 Thanks for the link. I’ll look into it.

@nomorenails Thank you and good luck to your daughter!

my son was accepted OOS. 4.25GPA W (3.9 UW). Top 2% of class. 35 ACT. 780 SATII Chemistry 770 SATII Math Level 2. Two APs last year and taking 4 APs this year. Lots of community service and clubs. Very excited!

I’m in state and I just got the invite to attend scholarship day.

For anyone who was wondering/worrying, scholarship emails (in the form of an invitation to Scholarship Day) were sent out this afternoon. I’m OOS, but I’m guessing that they also went to in-state students (though I’m not entirely sure).

Also, because it was brought up before, I got an invite to Scholarship Day but NOT to Excel@Carolina. Unsure if they’re mutually exclusive or not.
