UNC Class of 2020 EA Discussion Thread

Hey, y’all! Since there are so many chances discussions and the EA deadline just passed, I decided to make an official forum! With decisions coming out in three months, feel free to use this forum as an outlet to vent your frustrations, share your stress, and discuss things you are unsure of! Also feel free to share your stats so we can get an idea of what the competition may be like this year! The format is below.

I am a fairly great student in every aspect except on my tests. Is this school even possible to get in to with a 28 ACT? I am also cramming this ACT next weekend, which according to admissions will be considered for EA to UNC. So, there is still hope???

@tarheel555 Are you in-state or OOS? I think at 28 ACT is competitive for in-state. The middle 50% of the class of 2019 had between a 28 and 33. There’s definitely still hope! I have a 27, but a really high writing score, so hopefully that will be good enough. I’m taking it on the 24th, so hopefully I’ll improve and increase my chances. Glad to hear that they’ll still consider the ACT scores from the 24th test.

Decision: what are my chances in-state?

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 600 CR 700 M 650 W
ACT:n/a
SAT II:n/a
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.89
Weighted GPA: 4.59
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): (edit to make exact number ambiguous) At 21%, but it’s a pretty small sized school less than 110. It’s pretty competitive class too seeing that ~ 40 have 4.5s
AP (place score in parenthesis): APWH (4), AP LANG (4), AP CAL AB, AP LIT, AP MICROECON
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load:3 ap classes, & General honors classes/electives. Been slacking with the grades senior year.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 6th place winner of hr block budget challenge out of 16,000 people.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Saxophone/jazz band for 7 years (1st alto sax), mu alpha theta, nhs, nehs (treasurer), Boy Scouts (troop scribe/assistant patrol leader).
Job/Work Experience: n/a
Volunteer/Community service: 100+ hours with BSA involving diverse activities such as eagle projects and veteran appreciation projects.
Summer Activities: summer trip to Italy pretty eye-opening in terms of art, architecture, & culture.
Essays: exc. Wrote about a humorous sax incident freshmen year as personal statement, and chose the tedtalk prompt talking about the importance of an education in literacy of novels. These essays will get me into college most likely
Teacher Recommendation: should be nothing too bad. Ap English/Spanish teacher said they wrote good things about me.
Counselor Rec: okay
Additional Rec:
State: North Carolina
School Type: charter public
Ethnicity: undisclosed
Gender: male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):none

In state yes! Apparently they’re taking for EA tests taken through november?? I don’t know how this is possible bc it can take up to a month to have scores sent. My biggest fear is getting a really dank ACT score but them not getting it in time…and then getting rejected lol

I was wondering if anyone had received their Guest ConnectCarolina ID stuff in their email? I submitted my app ~5 days ago and wanted to know if anyone had heard anything/how long it would take.

I got mine the day after I submitted, so October 13th.

@PalmTree55 My friends who turned their stuff in approx the same time as me still haven’t received anything either… Should I pursue this with admissions now?

@ElusivelyGreat98 Your scores are good, but your EC’s are below average. If your essays are unique and well written, you’ll probably get in.

@jasishere You can go create one at Connect Carolina or you could contact admissions. Either way you need to get an account so that you can make sure they received everything.

Might as well post this, but chance me? OOS

I have a job working at an Electronics Recycling Warehouse, where I am an electronic test technician. I have been working there for a year.

@PalmTree55 OSS is very competitive. You’ll probably be fine, but don’t count on it as a lot is expected out of OSS students. Also, just curious: what achievement were you awarded by the APA? Whatever it is, it sounds neat.

Finally haha I have been waiting for someone to start this thread! My stats are good but I’m OOS so I truly have no idea. I’m hoping to be accepted to Excel@Carolina, though (that’s the dream, anyway)

Same. I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it until January. I am OOS, so I’m just hoping to get in.

I’m so excited! I submitted my early decision too! What might my chances be for Chapel Hill? I am an in state applicant!

Teacher Recommendation: Hopefully good from my Calc teacher.

Counselor Rec: My school’s dean of students wrote mine, I don’t know if that would make it any better or not but it’s probably generic.

In my opinion you’re in especially being in state @writerzt71

Hey there! I started the final submission process of my application at 11:55ish on the night of the 15th. The payment went through at 11:58pm according to the time stamp, but the application did not get submitted until 12:01am. Does anyone know if my application would automatically be transferred to the regular decision applicant pool or would they most likely take my application even though it was submitted after the deadline? On the common app page, I have a green check, and it says, “Fall 2016, Early Action” under the status tab on the dashboard page. Additionally, the top of the actual application says, “FY EA Fall 2016.” After submitting the application, I did have a confirmation email (from the Common App) saying that the application was submitted successfully. I am too embarrassed to approach admissions, so I am waiting for the Carolina Connect email; however, I have yet to receive one after approximately three business days. The anxiety has been eating at me, so I had to see if I could get any type of clarification. Before you heckle me, I agree that I should have just done the application earlier. I can’t fix that, so I am doing what I can now. If anyone has any insight, please share!

heckle heckle…haha…The only one who can tell you that they’ll accept your EA app is UNC admissions. I would call them, but if you prefer to wait for the connectcarolina setup email, it took four days for my S to receive his. I would still call even after receiving it.

Everything but my scores have been received by UNC. I am getting a little bit worried, I sent them on Oct. 7th

I wouldn’t worry yet; I still haven’t gotten the email with Connect Carolina yet, but I’ve gotten confirmation emails from the common app and UNC-CH
