Not gonna lie, I’ve been stressing out about UNC for a while. My UNC essay was different, but I don’t know of it was “hmmm that’s interesting” different, or if it was “what’s wrong with this guy” different. I don’t think my lack of extra curriculars helped either, but I made it, congrats to everybody else that made it.
Accepted OOS with a 2040 SAT and a really cool essay about wanting to be a female Pope as a kid B)
@collegebound1516 don’t sweat it. In many ways UNC-CH is harder than UVA due to fewer OOS slots. I went to UVA and absolutely loved it. If you get in to UNC in the RD, great, but you already have great options. Let the chips fall where they may, you already have wonderful options available to you.
thanks @DevilStick i’d love to go to UVA, I’m just not sure it’ll work financially. I was hoping for a UNC-CH scholarship, but obviously, being deferred, i’m not getting that, lol. Here’s hoping they make a mistake on my FAFSA and wind up giving me too much

tbh i think my saving grace was how involved i am at my school and how i have a passion that i have excelled in
congrats to all!!!
Accepted OOS, 2230 SAT, great essays and decent extracurriculars, previously got deferred from Brown, UMich, and UVa. This is my first college acceptance; I’m surprised that unc would offer me admission even though it has fewer OOS slots than michigan and uva. Congrats to those who got in! For those who didn’t, fight on, I totally understand your feelings.
@collegebound1516 No problem. I’m now a NC resident and my daughter was just accepted to UNC-CH. The whole college process for my daughter generated my current interest in UNC-CH. But honestly, I knew this was coming for at least a decade.
I also hold a degree from Duke and have lived near Chapel Hill in all but about three years since 1991. I have spent much time in both Chapel Hill and Charlottesville. I spent many nights in Chapel Hill as a graduate student at Duke.
There are some differences between the schools, but unless you plan to pursue engineering or architecture each of these schools will be great options. You are smart to consider finances. By all means consider an your in state (CA?) options if the financial impact is significantly better than UVA.
UNC-CH is a great school, but so are schools like UVA and U Mich and may other schools mentioned in this thread. There are a lot of great schools out there. I’d encourage anyone deferred or rejected to read this article:
Getting In
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2005/10/10/getting-in
I will add the following anecdote - initially I never wanted to go to UVA, I wanted to attend Yale or another T5 school. Fortunately my mother convinced me to apply to UVA, one of the “public ivies”. It ended up being the best school that admitted me so I begrudgingly enrolled with every intention of transferring to a top ten school (Stanford) after a semester.
Only problem was… I fell in love with the place immediately. I never looked back.
Point is - If you get into an ivy or UNC-CH or some other similar prestige schools, great. If not, don’t sweat it. Don’t let one school’s decision define your success. Give your other schools a chance.
Accepted in-state!!!
I have one question though. When I applied, I put down chemisty as my “plan” but I do not want to do chemistry anymore. How do I change it and should I change it before I accept?
