UNC Class of 2020 EA Discussion Thread

@tsuruda checking in from Windermere Florida :-h

Even when UNC requires applications 2 weeks earlier than other EA/ED schools, it releases its decisions one and half month later than the typical reply date.

Basically UNC takes 2 months more to process its EA applicants than other universities.

Maybe it’s the school’s policy, to remove all students who will be going to their ED schools from the admit list and therefore makes space for other applicants. I can’t imagine UNC taking that long to process everything.

I was wondering if someone could evaluate my credentials to see if I’m UNC worthy as an in state student.

-SAT 1800
•Math 630
•Reading 620
•Writing 550
-ACT 26

-I’m 76 out of 426 in my class (around top 17%)

Sorry if I forgot any details I’d be happy to add things in if it would help you give an honest appraisal.

@unctarheel0509 Your scores are a little low, but I think that you have other things that could potentially help you get in. You have an advantage because you’re in-state and a legacy. I wouldn’t say you’re definitely in, but you do have a chance.

Yo what are my chances (roughly) if I’m OOS, 35 ACT, two 800 subject tests, and 4.0 UW GPA? Could it be somewhat of a safety, or is it still kinda hard because OOS?

An important thing to keep in mind about this whole process is the sheer number of applications UNC gets for early action. If I’m not mistaken, the admissions twitter gave a number of around 19,000 for EA applicants this year. That’s an insane number of apps to read, especially given the winter holiday when the admissions office is closed smack dab in the middle of decision making time. In comparison, a typical ED program gets a few thousand applicants, my guess is a max of five or six thousand. In the past, Harvard has gotten 4,000-5,000 in a typical year. UNC has so many more applications to process, and if it means that my application gets a fair chance in the massive sea of applicants, I certainly do not mind the wait.

I was inspired to comment this from @AsianNotANerd, just because the frustration you feel is so identical to my own. As my classmates are hearing back from their first choices, it’s hard not to get impatient and jealous because to be honest, I would’ve applied ED to UNC if they had such a program. I just wanted to shed some positive light on this issue for the countless others who feel like us.

So take a deep breath everybody! Decisions come out this month, and we are so close. Every time you consider angry tweeting the UNC admissions twitter as I so often do, just remember that UNC is doing their best and by taking their time, we all have a fair shot at admission. Good luck to everyone! Go heels!

(Im)patiently waiting for decision from texas!

@carolinagirl922: Good for you and your mature perspective. I am rooting for you!

thank you so much @gandalf78! I will be pulling for you too

@WannabeVal as a fellow Texan, I feel your pain! best of luck to all of us in the lone star state

Hi guys!! I’ve been very crazy these past few weeks anticipating the January decision. Would you guys mind chancing me?

I’m OOS, female, hispanic background
34 ACT (took it one time), 5.0 w GPA, 4.0 uw GPA, and my school doesn’t rank. Family relaltions: my cousin and her husband went to UNC
I don’t know how great my essays were, but I think I did a good job on them.
I played softball 9-11 grade, have been avidly mountain biking since 9th grade (I am very passionate about it, hope that showed on my application), I also did art club, am a leader of environmental club, am the treasurer of biology olympiad, I have been working at my local Animal Hospital for 2 years now and want to be a vet, I also volunteered at a local farm with the livestock, and I participate in the community clean up day
I was also my school’s nominee for the Robertson Scholarship

Thanks!

@someguy1234 I would say still kind of hard. UNC is a little unpredictable for OOS

for an OOS student with a 32 act, how much does it help that my brother attends the public health school at unc? i know alumni is huge for oos, but do siblings mean anything at all?

@litlhoward2468 Probably won’t matter since he is at the graduate (I assume) level and not undergrad alum. Unless he is an UG alum.

@renegade23 no he is an undergrad at the public health school. he is in his senior year. will him being there help or not at all

It’s considered legacy so it should help, but not by much.

Asking for my son…he applied ED at Duke and was deferred. He applied to UNC EA as his safety. Not sure if he should have considered UNC a safety or not. Here’s his stats:

Top 10 Public School in North Carolina (so in state)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 15/635
AP: 10 APs (by end of Senior Year) and Honor courses (incl. AP Calc AB/BS, AP Stat, AP Bio, AP Eng, AP ES, AP Psych, AP HG, forget the other two…) Mostly 5s…
Awards: AP Scholar of Distinction
Ethnicity: White
Income: <$130k

ACT (breakdown): 34 (took it once)
SAT: 2030
GPA: 4.00 Unweighted / 5.00 Weighted

Extracurriculars/Awards:
Vice President of Student Council (11,12)
Student Council (9,10)
Member: National Honor Society (seniors only at his school); Natl Spanish Honor Society (9,10); National Technical Honor Society (11,12); HOSA; Beta Club; Mu Alpha Theta (math club)
Part Time Job: Had a job in junior year, now works as a tutor at a math center
Volunteers as a tutor at a local elementary school

Essays: Overall pretty good
Teacher Recommendations: Both should be great…teachers love him
Counselor Rec: Above Average

Other schools applied to: Vanderbilt, UVA, Davidson, Tulane, Colby

I’m concerned that he applied to no schools with rolling decision thinking he’d be automatic to UNC. Thoughts?

In state this seems to be an admit:).

in state should be a safety unless one of the letters of reference is awful… half of in state kids get in! by the way did you send both SAT and ACT to Duke and UNC? Seems the ACT is much better percentile?

@litlhoward2468 I don’t think it’ll help all that much. My sister was as sophomore at UNC when I applied, but I feel that my essays and stats got me in more than anything else.

I don’t think legacy matters for UNC nor should it for state funded taxpayer school. But I think they suggest that most legacies are in state anyway, and that is a huge boost.
