Hello, OOS applicant from Florida. ConnectCarolina got everything processed for me, now i gotta wait till January. Good luck everyone
Daughter submitted application on 10/12 and still has not received an email with her Connect Carolina guest id. How long does that usually take? It’s been a week. She did receive an email saying that they received her application, so I know that went through.
It took me about 2 days to get an email about Connect Carolina
DS also received the email within 2 days and application showed completed status within 2 days of LORs submission date.
Just submitted mine, so nervous!
Is 10/23/16 date applicable to all? I thought it was only for those impacted by hurricane.
@srk2017 If you were in an area deemed to have been affected by Hurricane Matthew, you would have received an email from the university. Otherwise, I don’t think the extension applies but I have no clue how strict they will be.
@collegebound1325 - That’s what we thought too. My DS submitted it before 10/15 deadline and his application is complete.
well i might as well post this…
I am a white male from North NJ. My HS is pretty much average and does not get kids into a lot of good schools. I have a 32 superscore on my ACT and a 760 on Math SAT II. I have a 4.5 weighted GPA and am in the top 10% of my class, even though my school doesnt rank. My grades are pretty good and my EC’s are very good. I dont know much about my recs, though I think they are pretty good.
Are my chances terrible?
@aromano31 I don’t want to crush your dreams nor do I want to get your hopes up. But based on your stats and the stats of UNC Chapel Hill, you are in pretty good shape but since I don’t know exactly what your ECs are, it’s tough to make a decision. Honestly, with a 15% acceptance rate for OOS applicants like you and I, might as well apply to Cornell. :))
@aromano31 your chances are not terrible at all, but you have to understand that OOS chances are at 18%. Put together the best application possible and see where it goes. Good luck!
I am a female URM from New York hoping to study Biology at UNC.
30 SAT - One sitting
13 AP courses - all 3s, most 4s, some 5s
2/296 class rank, 5.467 GPA
5 honors societies, President of English and Math
Associate Director and Principle Hornist-Honors Wind Ensemble
All County/Region/State French Hornist
First place molecular molecules Chem. Olympiads
4 year research in STEM program
Summers: mentored young aspiring Hornist.
Sophomore year-5 week Army Outreach STEM program at NJ IT
Last summer: made it into Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra 2. Trained and performed with top musicians from around the world. - 3 weeks.
Also spent 7 nights at MIT, selected for their Outreach Program e2@MIT, studied and presented in Genetic Engineering. That Professor wrote me an excellent reference.
Also, selected for free fly-in program at UPENN in September, not that that matters…
Any chance? I know my SAT is low, but I kept hearing at MIT and UPENN colleges are getting away from the tests and students that obsess about them…
*I meant ACT, not SAT. D’oh…
@Ceciliaagnes: Our OOS high school usually has a couple of students admitted each year to UNC-CH; and, with the exception of legacy students, our admitted students have composite ACT scores of 34+ and weighted GPAs of 4.5+. Other kids in our city who I know were admitted to UNC-CH recently have also had similar statistics. All of these kids were “unhooked” in admissions parlance (i.e., not a recruited D-1 athlete, or URM, first-generation college student, etc.).
If you have looked at the UNC-CH common data set, you will see that under Part C7 it states that standardized test scores, application essay, letter(s) of recommendation, and rigor of your high school record are “very important” academic factors considered for freshman admission, whereas GPA and class rank are “important” academic factors considered for freshman admission.
So, I would guesstimate that, because your test scores are a little lower than what I have seen UNC admit from my neck of the woods, and because UNC places more emphasis on standardized test scores than GPA or placement in your class (according to the information in its common data set), you are likely not going to be as competitive for OOS admission as many will be. If you have really good essays, that will help. But as noted elsewhere on this thread, OOS applicants can make up no more than 18% of an incoming freshman class based on UNC admissions policy; so these numbers are against you also.
I looked at last year’s class profile. It shows the middle 50% scored 27-32. But I know it’s more stringent for OOS applicants. I can only hope my URM and first generation status along with my ECs help. And I think I’ll retake the ACT for the last of my college apps, because I’m really not feeling too confident now.
I think that being URM and first-generation will indeed help you. But retaking the ACT can’t hurt; you might think about taking a test prep course for it, which may help your chances of boosting your ACT score.
My daughter applied for UNC also. We are in Taiwan so she is an international applicant. Did anyone know the STAT for international applicant ? (Admission rate, 25-75 % of SAT and ACT, etc…). Thanks
anyone know when the decisions will be released?
Last year is on 1/29

Anyone else have alumni parents that got a letter in the mail? It pretty much said thanks for applying, we appreciate alumni and there’s a lot of really talented people who applied so please still give us money if your kid doesn’t get in. We got a good laugh out of it
