To all you people who got accepted OOS- Congrats! You BEAT the 18% quota and something about you is so amazing and special. I hope you fall in love with UNC like I did.
To all you people who got deferred and denied OOS- you’ll be okay. UNC is an awesome school, but unfortunately they don’t have the space for us OOS kids. This deferral stings for me because I’ve always dreamed of going to UNC as a little kid…repping their carolina blue which looks amazing on me and just being on that beautiful campus. I got into UVA, NCState (park finalist), and even Princeton early action, so I’m quite disappointed. But the important thing is that- you guys can still get into awesome places and go wherever you want to . Don’t have the mindset of “I couldn’t get into UNC so I can’t get into anywhere else.” If you say UNC has a 33% acceptance rate and only 18% of them can come from OOS, you’re looking at only about a 5% chance, which is daunting compared to even some of the best schools in the country. So keep your hopes up people! Can’t wait to see where you all get in in the spring!
Accepted OOS. 26 ACT and 3.5 weighted GPA. No legacy, just an incredible resume and EC’s. I’m sure my Rec’s were good too
Anyone have guesses as to when excel@Carolina and scholarships are released?
@Njv1960 did your son receive the no decision till Jan. 30th letter? If so, any ideas why? I know my son had his app completed by Oct. and am really unsure why he didn’t end up in the accepted, deferred or rejected pile.
Has anyone received any info about scholarships?
@jruesmith7 Sorry about your deferral. You have an incredible outlook and have some amazing schools to choose from.
If Carolina blue looks really good on you, pursue RD admission–write a letter of update & continued interest in the next 2 weeks.
@sunshinemiracle I know that I meant do you know when they notify you if you qualify?
@jruesmith7 thank you for your post. I was starting to feel like now i dont have a chance of getting into my favorite school, Georgetown. Im sure you’ll get in rd. Congrats on getting into princeton btw!
FOR EVERYBODY WONDERING ABOUT EXCEL@CAROLINA!!!
“While timing may vary by program, students who are selected will typically be notified shortly after they receive their offer of admission.”
This is from the Excel@Carolina FAQ page. Here’s the link: http://admissions.unc.edu/excelcarolina-faqs/
@hopelessopus12 No!! Don’t read anything into your deferral other than UNC was not able to make a decision to offer you decision at the EA stage. I know rationally you must know this. I get it’s disappointing but let it roll and move forward. You’ve already done everything you need to do and unless something worthy of updating your app occurs, just wait out your decisions. I know it must be stressful now but as someone else said there are people who get deferred/ denied at one school only to be accepted at other peer schools or more selective schools. Hang in there.
Accepted in state with 4.2 GPA and 33 ACT #GoHEELS
Accepted in-state with a 4.6 GPA and 1175 SAT score. Yes, my SAT was on the lower side, but I had strong essays along with many extracurriculars. For those of you reading this a year from now, low test scores do not kick you out of the game!
Just guessing here, but since UVA and UMich released their EA decisions right before UNC, there may have been several withdrawals from UNC and therefore some last minute slots open for acceptance, which maybe your son falls under(?) Good luck to him! @crazyboymom
Gang gang. OOS applicant waiting to be deferred or rejected.
Denied OOS. 33 ACT, 5.4 W GPA, 3.8 UW GPA. Captain of two sports teams and leadership position in 3 clubs
No answer at all - no letter and on web it still says application hasn’t been evaluated - daughter applied early action in October. OOS. National Merit Semifinalist, ACT 35, 3.95 UWGPA 4.5 WGPA, thespian, leadership in two clubs, very competitive public high school, 8 APs all with fours and fives. AP scholar with distinction. Currently getting all A’s. We don’t know what has happened and hopefully she’ll get through to admissions on Monday since there was zero word.
Denied OOS, 33 ACT, 6.3/6.4 W, 3.9 UW. Captain of two sports, school record holder, leader of two clubs… thought my essays and recs were good too
Accepted in state. 1300 sat (690 M 610 R), 4.9 W GPA, 3.9 UW GPA. 8 AP classes, yearbook editor, varsity football, basketball, and track. A couple math clubs and honor societies too.
I thought my SAT scores could have been better but I’m kind of an overachiever in terms of clubs and trying to make good grades.
I was deferred OOS and I have gotten into all 6 other schools I’ve applied to so far including UVA, Georgetown and Notre Dame. Honestly surprised. I have a 98 weighted GPA and a 1530 on the new sat. Are my chances for Harvard now dim?
@crazyboymom We never got an email. I have no clue what it all means. My son also applied in early October
