@crg0613 – @TheBurbs is right. The letter went to parents who are alums – basically a way of saying it’s more competitive to get into UNC today than it used to be (though it’s always been hard) so don’t be upset if not admitted, lol. As in staters, our letter said in a recent year 45% of non-legacy applicants legacy kids got in and 55% of in-state legacy kids got in. I think the other poster said it was 15% non-legacy for OSS and 40% for OSS legacy applicants. Don’t worry about not getting letter and good luck!!
^^sorry for typo above – it should have said "As in staters, our letter said in a recent year 45% of non-legacy applicants got in and 55% of in-state legacy kids got in. . . "
@AlmostThere2018 I am in-state and I feel my chances are fairly good, but again I know exactly how competitive it is.

Extremely nervous about decisions.
I’m not sure if I missed this, but when is the tentative date for decisions? Like are we speculating anything other than Jan 31st
@Blazchkowski123 most people are predicting jan 26 as they usually release decisions on the last friday in january
Hi guys, thanks for your advice on my prompt mishap! I got a very nice message from an admissions counselor, who told me that it wasn’t a problem and decisions would be coming out “very soon” (: yay!
Reading that “very soon” just now gave me high blood pressure.
@bella2018 I’m glad that they got it sorted out!! Best of luck to you
Hey everyone does anyone know how much being a first generation college student and also being from a rural county will help my application?
Also, if neither my parents or step parents went to college but my sister went and received an associates from a community college am i still first generation?
@hscot7469 Hi from one first generation to another :-h I was extremely worried that being a first generation would not help but from what I have been told in this discussion, it actually makes you extremely unique! I am from a city so I am not sure about the rural county part. You are most definitely a first generation student because 1. Chapel Hill requires a 4 year degree in order for you to not be considered first gen. and 2. Your sibling is in the same generation as you; she doesn’t count anyway!! Best of luck to you!!!
@crg0613 I received the letter because my dad is an alum. I know other OOS legacy students received the same letter
@emmab15 thank you! I was worried that it wouldn’t help that much but it would be great if it does! And that’s good I’m glad I didn’t really know how the classification worked so that definitely clears it up for me. Best of luck to you as well!! it would be nice if we could all get into the school because everyone posting on here seems like great candidates
@crg0613 I think you’re in for sure! You have a great GPA, class rank, and you have great ECs. Also you are instate which helps a lot! If you had good essays then there’s no reason you won’t get in. I wouldn’t worry if I were you I think you have got this!
NC State released decisions tonight. Maybe UNC will be soon?
Does anyone know how Veteran friendly UNC is on admissions?
@hscot7469 I have always heard that being from a rural area helps, as UNC wants to promote geographic diversity within the state. Meaning all other things being equal, you will be more attractive with the same test scores, GPA, essays, than an applicant from Wake or Mecklenburg. And 1st Gen status is definitely considered by UNC, so you have two things going for you. Good luck!
So last year, UNC released Early Action decisions on a Friday. Should I expect Friday to be the day or is it completely random? I would definitely prefer a tad earlier. (:
I got deferred from NC State. Hopefully UNC will be different so I can stop stressing! Im not a patient person lol
Thank you! Im hoping for the best. Honestly UNC is the only school that I want to go to. This anticipation is driving me crazy!
