@emmab15, commit to NC State. You can always change your mind if you get accepted to Carolina.
Don’t despair, even if you don’t get in, you can always transfer after a year at State.
I know a couple of kids that transferred to Carolina after a year at a different school.
Carolina takes 800 transfer students a year.
Good luck!

Emma make sure you send letter of continuing interest, some good examples on internet what to say and more importantly what not to say. Good luck!!

DD accepted IS – 33 ACT; 4.0 UW GPA, 3 700+ SAT Subject Tests, National Merit SF, 8 APs plus NCSSM Online, great recs, essays and ecs. Exciting day!

@cssparent, thanks so much he’s excited. He’s a boarding school student and unfortunately a couple of his close friends were not admitted. As a result his trying to be more low key. I’m now anxious to hear about CSS. I’m hoping to hear something soon!

OOS (NJ) Accepted. SAT: 1560. GPA: 98 UW. 4 yr varsity soccer. 3 yr varsity basketball. NJ ODP soccer team. NHS officer. 6 AP classes. National Spanish Exam silver medalist. Various school academic awards. Competitive high school. Strong teacher recommendations. Legacy.

OOS Deferred Act- 34, Gpa 4.31…wasn’t expecting to get in glad for a second chance!

Was deferred and I’ve never been so happy. Everyone I know from my school (about 30 applicants total) has been rejected, so I am pumped. Few questions. 1) Where can I send my letter of continued interest? 2) Will a low grade in AP calculus completely take me out of the running? Had 94 first quarter and I dropped to 84 second quarter. This class is tough. Any other advice would be great! OOS

Can anyone attest to UNC’s deferral pattern?? Is it like Harvard, where they defer most applicants, or is it more selective, like Rice and Stanford are? Not that I am comparing UNC to them or anything, those are just the ones that are most known for their methods of deferrals!

@ggirl2288 you should send your LOCI to the admission officer that covers your state. Also there are great examples on internet about how to phrase your letter and what not to say. Good luck!

@emmab15 You will have until May 1st to commit to any school, if not admitted through Early Decision. I would suggest that you update your application with UNC and wait until they release their second batch of decisions. Technically, you can commit to NC State, but you will lose a deposit ~$500 if you wish to change to UNC should you get in later. Just hang in there and keep on doing great!

@anxiouswreck UNC usually doesn’t defer many people, only the ones whom they are seriously considering:)

@anxiouswreck not sure but if you think about the fact that only 18% of admitted students can be OOS that make is pretty competitive. They probably defer some very strong OOS candidates because they assume they are safety for some of those that are actually aiming for Ivy League schools.
