S was denied OOS with a 35 ACT and an unweighted 3.5 gpa at a top prep school . Knew it was a reach but these results make it clear it was a huge reach. Best wishes to all future Heels.
Makes no sense to apply UNC (CH) with OOS status. The stats need to get into the program would get you into UVA, UMich at a rate arguably significantly higher. Year after year, people make the same mistakes thinking UNC SAT score range is lower, and therefore easier to get in vs the other two famous public state universities. Fact of the matter is the OOS stats needed to get into UNC is more difficult vs the other two. In combination, UNC cares a lot about GPA. The way the HS around the country weighted the GPAs based on Honors, AP classes is different. My DS HS weight honors as plus 0.5 on GPA and AP plus 1.0 on GPA (if the final test score is 90+ at school, otherwise, it would be 0.5). I know some HS, even in the same area as my DS weighted the GPA differently, let alone those schools across regions of the country. Throw in rampant grade inflation in some of these regions, it is almost impossible to compare a kid with another from another region equally. But with the volume of applications, there is no way UNC is able to look at all the factors and weigh them equally. OOS applicants are at a very serious disadvantage when it comes to UNC. I hope future applicants take note and not beating themselves up on a reject from UNC. We learned that with our 1st daughter application. UNC - deferred EA - then nope. She got into UMich, graduated with neurosci major, GPA at 3.87, now in JH med school. So an UNC defer/reject don’t mean the end of the road, esp. if you apply OOS.
My opinion is that it’s a bit of a crapshoot from school to school once you are in the “zone” of acceptable stats. My daughter was accepted to U Michigan, UNC Chapel Hill and flat out denied at UVA…Who knows…Can’t spend too much time trying to deconstruct it, too many variables.
Both had consistent volunteer hours over 3.5 years. I assume excellent recs and essays.
Those who were rejected—It is difficult, but there is a plan for you. UNC a nice place, but many other schools just as nice and they will provide you with just as many opportunities. Hang in there and best of luck.
Hello @breakfeastclub1234567890! I am a freshmen Covenant Scholar and I know last year, I received my notification late March. It might vary though depending on how fast you give them the other financial aid stuff they may ask for in your ConnectCarolina.
@ggirl2288 I have not posted on this site in a long time, but I want to share my thoughts as an IN state parent. Our child is both a UNC and NC State legacy. Keep in mind that in 2016 only 10% of deferred applicants were accepted. In 2017, only 4% were ultimately accepted. I suspect this year that number will be even lower due to the surge in EA apps. TIME FOR PLAN B. To those who were accepted to NC State and are interested in STEM, why would you not go? Their programs are awesome/nationally ranked! TOO much attention gets paid in these forums to the school ‘brand’ and not enough about the individual programs/majors of those schools. There are some majors that UNC does better and some that State does better, period. Think less about the ‘mascot’ and more about what you want out of your education/degree.
Alas, Love the school that loves you, move on, and be HAPPY because in the end it doesn’t matter as much where you go as what you do when you get there.
does anyone know if excel@carolina emails have come out yet? if I didn’t get one does that mean I don’t have a chance at merit scholarships? someone on the results thread said that they’d already received the email so now I’m worried
@anxiousco2022 two weeks ago a few people here received email that they were semi finalists for the Chancellors science scholarship. They were asked to complete two additional essays. We haven’t heard anything about the other excel Carolina opportunities. I think that in past years the emails that announce finalists for all of them were sent shortly after admission decisions.
I was reading on the merit scholarship website that finalists are notified in early January. I’m assuming this is an error or out-of-date, as decisions weren’t even OUT in early January, but could someone confirm for me?
@minimango It’s actually 4,200 spots, not 4,200 admits. UNC admits more students than there are spots, because the school expects a certain percentage of students to decline. Last year’s breakdown was 40,918 applied, 9,709 admitted, and 4,355 enrolled.
