^^^ Yeah, UW-Madison gave me my decision yesterday instead of end of January! Hop UNC does the same.
Decisions won’t be any earlier than 1/25. They always say 1/31, but usually release a few days early.
Last year they were released on jan 28th
Just about a month and a little more to go until we know our fate!!! By the way, does anyone know if UNC defers for EA? Or do they just either accept or reject you outright?
They have deferred some in the past, if history is any indication.
Stinks I really hate hearing the word “deferred” after I got deferred from Tulane about a week ago. I’m hoping immensely that UNC EA can finally bring me some good news here.
@Pastpower sorry to hear that about Tulane. Are you IS for UNC?
@chb088 No, I am OOS for UNC, unfortunately. But, I think my Tulane deferral was attributed to the idea that Tulane is notorious for deferring stellar applicants EA that haven’t visited because they think they’ll end up at better areas and are only applying to Tulane as a type of prestigious safety. Although I know UNC OOS is brutal, I feel a lot better about my chances since I have visited, spoke to the admissions director, and did a summer program here once. But, we’ll see in January.
Does anyone know when they send out anything about scholarships? When are you supposed to find out if you got into the honors college or selected as a finalist for one of their merit scholarship programs (Chancellor’s Science, Carolina Scholars, etc.)?
@anxiouswreck Information regarding programs should come with your admissions decision, although I do know some instances of the school contacting finalists or recipients before admissions on certain occasions. Just a side note though, merit and honors programs are almost unheard of aside from the top 2-3% of UNC applicants
@pastpower yeah, it’s crazy how competitive these scholarships are. I saw some people on this thread get into ivy leagues EA/ED but not advance in Morehead here. That’s so insane!!
@anxiouswreck Hopefully that’s me. Made it to semifinals for Morehead Cain but didn’t advance to finals. Maybe my luck will turn elsewhere.
Can anyone please advise if my daughter is likely to be admitted? She applied EA as an in-state student, 1480 SAT, 3/425 class rank at a top 10 HS, 4.0/5.25 uw/w gpa, student body officer, IB diploma + 3 AP courses. She was deferred ED to Duke and is devastated, hopefully good news at the end of January. Thank you in advance.
@Carolinadad: You may be able to get an idea of where your daughter places relative to recently admitted students by looking at the UNC-CH Common Data Set, here, https://oira.unc.edu/files/2017/07/cds_2016_2017_20170411.pdf: Part C9 of the CDS gives the median 50% for both SAT and ACT scores, as well as the percentage of the entering first-year class falling within certain ranges of SAT and ACT scores; Part C11 gives the percentage of entering first-year students falling within a range of unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale, and Part C12 gives the average high school GPA of first-year applicants.
The CDS also tells you, under Part C7, that standardized test scores, application essay(s), letter(s) of recommendation, and the rigor of the high school record are “very important” academic factors considered for freshman admission, whereas GPA and class rank are “important” academic factors considered for freshman admission. Extracurricular activities, talent, and character/personal qualities are considered as “very important” non-academic factors.
Your daughter’s SAT score is above the mid-50% as I read the CDS, and her GPA is very good. While I think that she is very competitive for admission as an in-state student, it may well come down to the quality of her essays and LORs, which are “very important” admissions factors.
I don’t know whether your daughter’s high school has Naviance or any similar program that gives information about how students at her high school have done in applying to UNC-CH; if so, you/she might peruse that data. Or a guidance counselor at her school could probably give some insight into how students from her high school have done in UNC-CH admissions.
Best of luck to your daughter. Also, tell her not to take the deferral from Duke personally; it’s just a business decision by the school, probably related to anticipated yield. My own daughter cried when she got deferred from one of her top choices; but after learning that all of her friends who applied to the same school were also deferred, she felt much better. She was subsequently deferred from a second school, which she then took with much more equanimity; and when she was accepted to UNC-CH, her attitude became, “The heck with the rest of those places!” I am confident that it will work out well for your daughter in the end.
@gandalf78 Thank you for your reply. I hope she gets accepted and has the same attitude as your daughter.
Sorry to ask, as I understand it is very hard to tell, but can you please chance me for EA admission.
I am an out of state student from New Jersey.
I have a weighted GPA of 97.98 and will graduate with 8 Ap/IB HL courses and 2 dual credit courses.
My SAT score is 1420 (super scoring wouldn’t change this)
I am a competitive dancer and a dance major in high school(my school has majors I know this is a weird feature for a high school) but will not pursue this in college. I, however, will be applying as a biochemistry major. This year I have tripled up in science classes, all at an upper level.
I am president of the national science honor society, my school representative at large( a student council officer that attends the board meeting), a key club officer, a Peer leader and a member of NHS and national English honor society. I participated in cheerleading and my school plays each for two years. On top of ECs I have two summer jobs and hostess during the school year.
I’m not sure if this will help but my essay was on my Lisp and how it has affected my life mentally and socially. One of my supplementals used the word balance under multiple definitions, to take about my hard decision to attend my public HS where I would be a dance major instead BioTech a vocational school ranked #1 in NJ.
Thank you so much for your time and insight to help with this nerve-wracking time.
@sydsileno OOS EA is just brutal, and I’ve honestly never seen that GPA scale before. However though, your score is good. In the end it will probably come down to the strength of your writing and LOR. My only drawback with that though is that your EC’s don’t really communcts your interest in biochemistry; however, this may not hold much back on your app. In the end it will just come down to how best you distinguish yourself.
anyone know how much weight attending the North Carolina Governor’s School carries for UNC admissions?
@Carolinadad - The best tool at your disposal, at least for CH or NC State, as a resident of NC, is Naviance. If your daughter’s class is 425 strong, and her school is top-10 in the State, odds are, at least 40, maybe more, have gotten into each of these colleges. Her rank is #3- Do the math. What are the odds a top-3 student at a top-10 high school in the state will NOT get into their flagship college?
@Essel Thank you for sharing that logic, of course it makes perfect sense. Looking at it from a numbers standpoint it seems like she will likely be admitted, I will ask about Naviance. I guess she has been focusing on the deferral, and worrying too much about the subjective aspect.
