UNC Class of 2022 EA Discussion Thread

Research is not hard to get- my daughter has been involved since her first year… as have many.

@appalachymom Yes I’m also OOS from FL and I received an invitation to Honors Carolina

OOS from PA, received invitation to Honors Carolina a few hours ago

Did anyone receive notifs about merit scholarships yet? Holding out minimal hope for that even though the chances are literally zero for out of state, haha

Thanks for the replies. Good to know that OOS students can be invited. Maybe my son will ask to be re-evaluated, but it sounds like the education will be great even without Honors.

The education and ability to get involved are truly amazing… my D is also very close with her professors.

Also, remember you don’t have to be in Honors to take Honors classes. Like the rest of life, college is what you make of it and I think most of the opportunities on campus are open to anyone so there’s tons of chances to do amazing things. I’ve also heard UNC is hard – classes are more difficult than Duke is the “word on the street” in my daughter’s circles. Science is particularly rigorous.

My D is in the sciences- she does very well … but with that comes a lot of hard work and studying. It’s well worth it- the research positions, relationships with profs, involvement on campus… it’s all exactly what she hoped for.

@skipper99 do you know when they send out the financial aid packages?

@UVAwahoowha i wish i knew, sorry :frowning:
no idea about need or merit based aid. if anyone has any info about when merit scholarships come out, it’d be greatly appreciated. looks like a lot of people have asked the same question on this thread already, sorry to add to the mess of questions haha

Like if you are a STEM major, I do not recommend honors classes but if you want to go for it, you can but as a Computer Science major here, I do not see a point as regular classes are hard enough.

@Mickey2Dad @MDmom2018 Yes same with me. I got into UVA and UNC but deferred from Michigan and no one from my school got into UMich .

so if we haven’t been notified at this point, it’s likely that we were not selected for honors carolina, yeah?

^

I spent a little time looking back at last year’s thread, and clearly Excel notifications don’t come out all at once.

Also, it appears that merit aid notifications went out around Feb. 8 and 9th? It was hard to tell how many folks got the info via email vs. in official letters.

Bottom line: I think there’s plenty of notifications still coming out so I wouldn’t rule anything out at this point.

@orangeandblack21 Hey I remember seeing you in the Duke thread. Are you deferred too? [sob]

We have not heard from any of the Excel programs but my daughter was named a Carolina Scholar with merit money. Should we hear from Excel soon?

Congrats!!! I think all students who receive merit aid are invited to join Honors Carolina so that notification is prolly yet to come. Not sure about others Excel opportunities. Did Carolina Scholar notification via email? When did it arrive? Is your daughter IS or OOS? And congrats again!

Just notified I was a Carolina scholar. Does this really cover tuition, room, board, and fees for all 4 years?

To all that are hearing on excel programs and scholarships, congratulations! That us fantastic news!!!
For those that are receiving, these notifications are coming to your email address that you used for the Common App? Does any of this show on your connect carolina, where your admissions decision is posted?
We seem to not get all of the emails from UNC (even checking in Gmail spam folder) & just don’t want to miss a notification.
Not getting one, won’t determine if my son attends or not, but could help be a deciding factor.

@Pastpower You have to maintain a 3.0 GPA to continue to receive it per the Carolina Scholars webpage.
