@blmom1 – Congrats!!! You and he must be thrilled! And thanks for letting us know - it helps!
Based on this and the email above, it does sound like the merit notifications have gone out. Remember need-based aid at UNC is top notch so don’t give up your Tar Heel dreams!
If all merit scholarship information was sent out on Friday, why are some people just now receiving notice this week? Could it be released in waves, or am I simply grasping at straws here? :))
@berkeley101 my DS was a semifinalist for CSS as well. We haven’t received any information from that either. He received word on Monday that he received the Excel Carolina research scholar so I assumed he hadn’t been chosen for CSS. I don’t think it’s typical to get two. Unfortunately, the research scholar doesn’t include any money, but he’s just happy to be included in one.
For all those worried about paying for UNC, please remember that the university is a national leader in providing need-based aid through the Carolina Covenant. In fact, last year they won a national award around equity and higher education. One of the things that makes UNC special is its strong economic diversity – something that many private colleges don’t have. Having diverse voices in classes makes the education even better, in my opinion. Less of a ‘bubble’ atmosphere.
Anyway, when your financial aid package comes if you still have concerns you can appeal. So PLEASE don’t’ let lack of merit-aid make you worry too much – they give MUCH more every year in need-based aid. I know it’s a stressful time, but you’ve done the hard work to get into UNC so please enjoy that and don’t be afraid to reach out to the financial aid office to help make it all work – they want you to come to UNC as much as you do! (No, I don’t work for UNC, but my job focuses a lot on college access around the country so I know about this topic!)
@berkeley101 - From UNC admissions blog, by May 1st. http://admissions.unc.edu/enroll/first-year-checklist/
Accept your spot in the class of 2022 by May 1. Log into your Connect Carolina Student Center to enroll. You’ll be officially a Tar Heel once you accept your offer of admission and pay the $250 deposit.
can anyone give me any tips on what my letter for reconsideration for Carolina honors should say. I didn’t get an email saying that I was selected for it, so I’m assuming I didn’t get into the honors program. I did however get the summer study abroad fellowship, but was really wanting Carolina Honors.
We are OOS and a bit puzzled too. D was admitted but no invite for Excel, honors or scholarship. Perfect GPA, 9 APs, SAT 1580, NMSF, founder of non-profit, great letters of rec, essays etc.
@minimango Yes, he heard today! I was shocked. Will we see you in a few weeks??
Did you also get the acceptance into research scholars? I assumed he was out of the running for CSS as a result.
@Mom6 – if she’s really interested in UNC I would ask for reconsideration. Maybe they didn’t think she’s likely to choose UNC so didn’t extend offer? Submitting for reconsideration would show real interest in actually ending up at UNC (if it is indeed her top choice and a deciding factor on whether to attend – otherwise I wouldn’t bother). Also, she can apply after 1st semester.
