UNC Class of 2023 EA Discussion Thread

Accepted OSS
ACT: 33
UW: 3.94
W: 5.43 (school does out of 6)

First off congrats to those who were accepted! This year seemed to have a very very tough applicant pool. I think what helped me was very clear STEM path as well as interest in art, two things which usually donā€™t go together. UNC seems to care much less about scores and more about specific interests. I feel they donā€™t want well rounded students but kids that have found their niche and can excel in it at UNC, which can be seen in essays/ ECs, not test scores. Again congrats to those accepted, and those who werenā€™t I know you will still do great things at great schools!

@my3sonshines I actually live in New Hanover County. I was kind of surprised by my result, but seeing as Iā€™m not a legacy, I should have seen it coming. Oh well, if itā€™s not meant to be, itā€™s not meant to be.

Accepted OOS (Kansas)
GPA: 4.5
ACT: 32

I canā€™t even express how surprised I was - considering the In-state quota.

OOS Accepted (GA)
ACT 36 / 4.7 W GPA

Does anyone know when UNC will release the early action statistics regarding the percent of students accepted in-state and out-of-state?

Sorry if this has already been answeredā€¦Is it believed that Honors Carolina invites will be released today, based on previous years? Also, how does the information come? Email? Portal? Thank you

Just mailed a letter to UNC! Prayers up??

Does anyone know if Iā€™ll still be considered for a scholarship even if I didnā€™t mark it in my common app?

Hello. Does anyone know the Facebook group for unc 2023 or a group me?

@feenicks do you think they will Come out on a Sunday?

@dkahfdfhk Good luck! I would also call them. Do you have a ā€œpersonal contactā€ on your portal? Over to the side of the screen? Just call that person (if you have one) and say you sent an email explaining your circumstances and that you are requesting their guidance in filing an appeal. They are admissions ā€œcounselorsā€ so they should help you through whatever process you need to go through. We are all pulling for you!

@catmomof3 they did last year

It looks like the first mention of Honors Carolina acceptances (via email) last year was Sunday, January 28 @ 3:09 pm. Then sporadic mentions for at least another week. Sounds like they come out in waves.

@Tuxrd2 I donā€™t seem to have a personal contact on my portal when looking on my phone, Iā€™ll look on the laptop later today. Iā€™ll call them up tomorrow and I sent a personalized physical letter today and an email on Friday. I appreciate your help!

OOS Waitlisted :confused: Does anyone know what % of waitlisted applicants usually gain a spot?

@coffeebean178 9 OOS applicants did

@coffeebean178 only 22 of 2300 waitlisted people got in last year, so very few unfortunately :frowning:

29 ACT In stateā€¦62 College dual enrollmentā€¦Landscape company owner and founderā€¦horse farm barn managerā€¦and very little volunteer experience.
Waitlisted. Does anyone know how many people they waitlisted, and what percent were in state? A waitlist means I was qualified but there was no space, correct? I saw that approximately 1 percent got off the waitlist last year. The waitlist accepts applicants purely off lottery, meaning that I have as good of a shot as someone much more qualified, correct? TIA

Realistically what are my chances of a change in the admissions decision based off the letter? I explained familial circumstances that led to an application that made me seem weak and listed ECs and elaborated on some that I left out on the Common App. It was polite and described my love for UNC and a conditional appeal on the RCN situation. @Tuxrd2

@dkahfdfhk realistically your chances of an appeal based on circumstances that changed your application is low. They rarely change their minds on that type of basis. If they evaluated your application as an OOS when you were actually in state that could be enough to re-evaluate you in the RD round though. At that point, your additional circumstances email would be part of your ā€œnew application,ā€ which would help. But if there was no actual error in residency status, then your chances on appeal are pretty low. If you donā€™t find a personal contact on your portal message me and I can give you mine.
