My nephew is at UNC-CH and he uses it for attendance in one of his classes.

Does anyone have any experiences to share on UNC Charlotte?

I live near UNC Charlotte and am also an alum. I started at another big state u and only ended up at UNCC because I married and had to transfer to finish. I would never, ever choose UNCC over UNC CH or NCSU.

Of the schools you have mentioned, I would venture to say that the UNC Charlotte area has more criminal incidents than the other schools. I think the campus per se is as safe as any but the same can’t be said for some of the surrounding area.
UNCC has lots of commuters, the campus is not really walkable to anywhere, doesn’t have a bus system for off campus students,no real entertainment for students in the area, not a lot of school spirit…although football starts next year so that may help.

If your D is in at both NCSU and UNC Chapel Hill, I would choose one of those depending on which she liked best and where she felt most comfortable. Both are good schools but have different atmospheres. My S turned down UNC for NCSU.
To say my S (NCSU '09) loved State would be an understatement. He would say it was the best four years of his life thus far! Of course there are thousands of others who would say the same of UNC CH. Has she visited both schools?

Both UNC and State are schools that are their own city (most students find comfortable communities within their own groups), UNCC is a school in a city, and your other choice is not a school that is often mentioned for a student accepted to UNC.

That was a big difference I noticed was that UNC and NC S were college communites where UNCC seemed to be more of a College where academics were good, but I too have been a little nervous about the points you mention. We have been visiting schools now since her Junior year, but now it is time for decision and we are trying to make the right one.

Thank you for your comments. We have not visited UNC CH lately, but plan to within the next month or so.

As a bio major is she also pre-med?

Have 2 kiddos that graduated from NCSU, 1 (daughter) as an animal science major and the other (son) as a biochem and microbiology major and genetics minor. Son is now a med student at UNC-CH and he loves it. Schools are not that far apart geographically and a shuttle goes back and forth between the two.

The two schools now share a joint program in biomedical engineering, bio at UNC-CH and the engineering done at NCSU. Very interesting. NCSU now offers Genetics as a major rather than just a minor. With UNC-CH having a top 20 med school the pre-med pre-reqs there can be competitive.

Both are fun campuses with much to do, big time sports, lots of research and TAing available, tons of classes…son took PE (golf, tennis, swimming and running) and had a blast. Now like some of his other alum friends he can golf and play tennis with them. Son’s good friends from high school did well at NCSU in majors not available at UNC-CH…architecture, engineering, and others the same at UNC-CH.

Chapel Hill has the #2 school for public health, and top 20 for business and medicine. Also well regarded for library science. NCSU’s vet school is #3.

So it is just her personel preference at this point.

One of the best things about living in NC, UNC-CH, NCSU, Duke, Meredith, NCCentral, Peace and a few others all within an hour of each other.

Gotta love those in-state rates!!!

Kat

Sounds like either would be a good choice depending on the major…Right now Bioloy, but pre-med may be in the cards. Thank you for your response.
