Do you think there is any way I could call up the admissions office and ask why I was not accepted? I'd really be curious to know.
UNC was my first choice school (I'm OOS, and I knew it was extremely competitive), so I was not surprised when I was rejected, but then I got IN to UVA and was waitlisted at Penn and Northwestern. UNC ended up being the only school that flat-out rejected me, and I think this is odd because of the results I got from the other schools. I think I'll like UVA much better anyways, and I'm glad this worked out, but I was just curious as to what exactly UNC was looking for that I didn't have.
Also, congrats to everyone accepted to UNC, I'm sure you'll love it.

I know what you mean…I got into UNC (oos) and flat-out rejected from UVA (oos)…college admissions vary from college to college and I don’t think anyone really knows what the heck they’re actually looking for. I mean, I have no idea why I was rejected from UVA (I actually thought my application was really good and I wrote some of my best essays) but then again I have no idea how I got into UNC when it’s so competitive for oos.
Oh well, don’t dwell on your rejection too much and congrats on UVA, it’s an awesome school!

I got into UNC OOS, WL at UVA, WL at Vandy, and Rej at Duke. I know someone who got into UVA that got WL at NYU. Into UVA and REJ and Vandy. Rej UNC and UVA but into Duke. There’s really no way to predict what colleges are looking for. I was in the same situation as purplelaughter, except UVa was my first chocuie. And now I couldn’t be happier. When life gives you lemons…

@theman44 I have the same exact situation. In UNC(oos) WL at Vandy and UVa(oos) and Rej at Duke. UVa was my first choice, but UNC looks better and better everyday.

Your comment suggest there is a clearly defined hierarchy between the universities you just listed. There is not. They’re all AAU members and are all some of the most selective universities in the country. UNC has been ranked as high as number 9, while Penn has been ranked as low as 19 (at the time, UNC, UVa and Northwestern were ranked #11, 15, and 17, respectively). Basically, what I’m getting at is these “hierarchy” of universities fluctuate up and down throughout the years. Just because you got into UVa or was wait-listed at Penn doesn’t necessarily mean you were automatically a competitive candidate for UNC.

I know we’ve all heard a similar story like this before, but I’ll say it anyway: I once met a kid who got into Princeton but was rejected from UNC. (true story)

…make lemonade. When life gives admission offices a batch of lemons, they choose most of them at random and expect them to turn themselves into lemonade. Naturally, many of the lemons they choose decide to be squeezed somewhere else, and others turn out to be sour.

i got into unc and waitlisted from nc state. instate. college admissions puzzle me too, but i consider myself lucky
