I’m just recently learning about this scholarship opportunity and I’m super disappointed I didn’t know about this before. I’ve missed the application for 2016-2017 school year, but does anyone know if you can apply after a first year of college?
And does anyone have anything to offer about this scholarship/other big money offers from UNC?
@b16yer Your only option now would be to attend UNC or Duke and then apply to the Robertson as a first year for one of their first year slots. They accept 2 UNC and 2 Duke students in the spring of their first year. Selection is incredibly competitive with ~400 applications for 4 slots across the two campuses.
Even if you didn’t apply directly to the Robertson program, all applicants to UNC and Duke are screened by the admissions office and high-potential candidates are funneled to the program for consideration…so if you applied to UNC and/or Duke, you were probably already considered for the program by the Admissions office and you just didn’t know it.
@Welltraveled20 Would they consider students only that got accepted? I applied regular decision to UNC, so this was past the deadline to apply to Robertson. I got waitlisted so could this have something to do with it?
Also, do you know how financing would work if I got pulled from the waitlist? They meet 100% of need, but I’m not sure how they’d do it in my case. As an OOS student, the cost of attendance would be ~50k a year. Considering that I’ve heard that they’re stingy with merit based scholarships, and the chances of getting any coming off the waitlist are unlikely. Where would the ~35k that theyd need to meet come from?
@b16yer Yes, of course you have to be admitted to be considered for one of these scholarships (regular decision students are still considered BTW through the admissions department). These are incredibly competitive. Only aim to give out around 15 of these scholarships out of the thousands of students who are admitted. Most admitted students don’t make the cut to even be considered, so they would not be considering anyone waitlisted. Sorry that’s just the reality! You can not bank on these types of highly competitive merit aid scholarships.
I can’t help you on the potential post-waitlist financial aid package. So many variables there. You will just have to see how that comes together, if it happens.
Merit is very hard to come by at UNC, especially for OOS, and the Robertson competition is other worldly. You are on the waitlist and odds are you won’t even get off the list. Please don’t waste your time thinking about merit any further-thousands are already admitted and any merit available quite obviously would have been awarded to them.
@planner03@Welltraveled20 Well I was hoping that a qualified for Robertson and merit aid, let alone acceptance since my HS record would make me a contender. However due to the highly competitive OOS acceptance rate, it became even more of a challenge to get accepted and then considered for the scholarship.
@b16yer I just looked at your stats, and you were certainly a solid UNC applicant, but unfortunately the competition is fierce for OOS. It is unfortunate that you weren’t aware of that prior to the application cycle. You have an outstanding resume, but seem to have received inadequate/poor guidance-I am sure you would have had some great acceptances/merit offers, if you had cast the right net.
