D and I are making a quick trip/visit to UNC and Duke. D mainly wants to visit UNC because of their journalism program. We are staying at the Carolina Inn. Is it close enough to UNC admin office to walk? I am renting a car at the airport, but would like to avoid the hassle of finding parking on campus?

While it is a doable walk, there are also parking spaces right outside the admissions office. All you need to do is run in a get a parking pass and you will be able to park there during your visit.

At Duke, stay at the Washington Duke Inn. It's a five star hotel connected directly to campus, so you can walk to everything.

You can walk anywhere on the UNC campus from the Carolina Inn. Have a great trip!

The campus is very 'cozy' imho and well integrated into the Town of Chapel Hill, so I agree walking anywhere should not be a problem. And I believe Admissions is in Jackson Hall which is not a bad walk at all from the Carolina Inn. Walk along Cameron from CI and veer right along Country Club to Jackson. Take your camera, you'll be walking right by the Old Well and Old East which has a cornerstone dated in the late 1700s.

Also, you can always catch the bus that runs through campus as well, since driving a car on campus can be a pain. I'm sure the Carolina Inn will help you find the right bus.

A couple of maps:
