Wow, crazy! My son also applied ED so if he is accepted he will never know, but that’s so late, although I guess no different than other schools. He has good stats but for OOS getting into UNC is a total crapshoot. No clue what they really look for. A girl my daughters year (2 years ago) is there, and I know someone I think 1 or 2 years older than them went.
Looks like over the last 5 years we have had 6/33 accepted. I don’t know if the 33 includes people like my daughter who apply then pull their apps when they are accepted ED elsewhere.
I think a lot of kids pull apps to UNC and UVA based on the EA notification timeline - I’m sure that helps their yield. UVA is even later because they have an ED pool that they need to address in December.
It’s a long time to wait. My daughter is applying to 7 schools and she has only heard from one (EA acceptance, thankfully) - the next she’d hear from is UNC.
UVA is also one he applied to and yeah I saw theirs is Feb I believe. UIUC this year pushed back their EA application deadline and is only have one notification date for everyone, EA and RD in February. They did this 6 years ago when my oldest applied and it was a mess, but with Covid I think they wanted to give students as much time to test as possible. The problem though is they miss out on some great candidates who apply ED and/or don’t want to wait that long for a school when they start hearing from others and go visit. Although who knows if visiting is going to be happening much this year either.
My son applied to 7 so far, 3 more if he doesn’t get into his ED. His safety says he will hear by some date in January. Michigan also bumped to the end of January. So, the way it’s looking now, his ED is the first school he will be hearing from in about 2 weeks! It’ll be great if it’s over then, but sort of a bummer that he might never know if his hard work paid off at this other great schools.
I hope all the kids who are accepted ED elsewhere will remember to pull their apps from schools like UNC/UVA/Michigan - they are so competitive to get in, so every pulled app helps someone else get in! It is a drag to wait from October to end of January! My son applied to 5 schools and so far has only heard from one (UGA acceptance). Good luck to all you ED students out there! I hope you are all accepted and can enjoy the holidays not worrying about college!
Same - my daughter is also in at UGA - I hope they send the Honors/Scholarship notifications soon! Sounds like it will not be this week. She sent the last of her applications in yesterday, so now it’s just a waiting game.
I hope they do too considering our children and we signed a contract stating that we are acknowledging that all applications will be pulled immediately if accepted with the sole exception being if the financial aid applied for doesn’t meet a family’s ability to pay.
My son if accepted, just as my daughter did, will pull immediately. Unlike her, I don’t expect to hear him whine (one difference between boys and girls) that she never got to hear from the rest of the schools she applied to. Heard from 2, never heard from the remaining 4. Best part though is she has no regrets on her ED decision and that’s the best part of being a parent. Knowing our kids made the right college decision. May it work out for the next one and all of yours!
Agree completely! My son applied to UVA and UNC OSS which are reaches for everyone. I would hope those who are in another school ED would withdraw their application. Many apply to these public ivys with the idea they will be admitted to an Ivy. My son - great grades and scores - applied to zero Ivys and wants to go to a big state school. UVA and UNC are at the top of his list!
I noticed this with my daughter and she has as well at school, a lot of kids at certain schools tend to apply to the same subgroup of schools. Every so often there’s an outlier, but for the most part many of in the same group. That’s why we see each other in all the same forums.
I said something to my son today about applications numbers at some of the schools and he just nonchalantly said back “Who knows? We just have to see what happens.” Haha. Sometimes I wonder if he is really my kid with that chill attitude. I think he will be fine and happy wherever he ends up. So different than my girls.
Hey everyone! I’m oos and applied ea for computer science. 1480 sat 4.0 gpa uw I don’t know my weighted but I’ve taken 7 APs. varsity sport all 4 years, coding club officer 3 years, and some volunteering/coding start up internship experience.
Any idea of my chances of getting in?
Hey! You seem like a competitive applicant, and you should be proud of all the hard work you’ve put in so far. As you know, OOS acceptance is incredibly competitive, so there is no telling how you will fair. Just hope for the best. I am sending you all of the luck in the world, and I genuinely hope you get in!!!
Applied EA
Economics
35 ACT
1550 SAT
3.7 UW/not sure weighted (I go to #20 private high school in the country and they don’t rank students or weigh GPA)
2 APs (AP Euro 4, AP Bio 4)
Finance Internship
loads of community service
club leaderships
tutoring for many years
2 independent studies
I’m not optimistic about my chances because I’m OOS but I’m hoping. Seems like a lost cause though if you’re OOS, but good luck to everyone!
My daughter is Freshman OOS at UGA and in Honors college. She go $0 in Merit. Last year on blog they finally broke down that Top 4% of OOS applicants get merit, and that included grad students. She qualified for Classic Scholars, but that is just the threshold to be considered. If you get money from OOS Merit from UGA, it is like winning the lottery. She absolutely LOVES it there!
I think most OOS schools are in the same boat. Only 18 percent out of state kids and that includes athletes and legacies (and there are a bunch of OOS legacies). My son’s small high school rarely has anyone admitted to UNC. This last year there were 5 admitted - all legacies. If you are not an athlete nor an OOS legacy it is a very difficult admit for sure!!
In state, Wake County (). 3.7 UW, 4.3 W, 16 honors classes, 8 APs through fall of sr year, not submitting ACT (26) as could not retake. Also, rank just outside of 10th percentile but had serious health issues. Long shot! Good luck everyone.
