Reflection

Strengths: ACT score, extracurriculars, passionate in essays
Weaknesses: GPA/class rank was mehhh
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I worked meticulously on my application so I could get into Chapel Hill and was extremely passionate in my extracurriculars/essays. My GPA/class rank was not ideal for UNC, but UNC’s admissions are truly holistic, which I am extremely grateful for.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted UGA honors college with 9k a year scholarship, UT-Knoxville with 19k a year scholarship and got into their engineering honors college, and full ride to Ole Miss. Denied UVa (expected)

General Comments : I spent months and months and months worrying about this and finally got what I’ve been working for all of high school. I am extremely happy and excited for the future and my life at UNC. I spent a lot of time worrying about getting in and was constantly comparing myself to the kids with perfect grades at my school, doubting that I would get in. My GPA isn’t bad, but it’s technically below average for UNC. However, I worked my butt off on my application and made sure everything else was above average for UNC, including EC’s and ACT score. I was passionate in my essays and conveyed how badly I wanted to go there. In the end, it all works out. Congrats to everyone who got in, GDTBATH

Decision: Accepted OOS

Objective:

Reflection

Strengths: scores, grades, extracurriculars
Weaknesses: essay weren’t that great, no hooks
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: good stats; probably the best applicant from my school
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: Ohio State, Deferred: Harvard

General Comments: The line “your enrollment will depend upon your successful completion of your current academic year. We require that you continue to achieve at the level that enabled us to offer you admission” from the acceptance note worries me, as I have two F’s and a C right now. I plan to get my grades up to straight B’s for the rest of the year, which is contrary to my previous straight A’s; hope they don’t mind.

Please use the following format to post your results. Good luck to everyone! We should find out any moment now.

Not gonna lie, I’ve been stressing out about UNC for a while. My UNC essay was different, but I don’t know of it was “hmmm that’s interesting” different, or if it was “what’s wrong with this guy” different. I don’t think my lack of extra curriculars helped either, but I made it.

. My daughter was deferred. 4.0 unweighted, 4.79 weighted, national merit semifinalist so far… 13 AP classes, 2190 SAT no superscore, rank 1/205 excellent recs including one from an advisor who is an alumni, strong essays, lots of extracurricular with leadership positions, lots of community service and rigorous schedule.
Looks like we’re waiting a few more months. Good luck to everybody!

Essays (rating 1-10, details): The topics were very average and I did not feel confident that they would stand out, although a plus is my writing style is consistently pretty good.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10, I was his student of 4 years
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10 Average but good writer
Counselor Rec: 9/10

Applied for Financial Aid?: I applied for FAFSA and CSS
Intended Major: Public policy
School Type: Large public high school

Reflection
Strengths: Being in state, of course. Other than that, course rigor and outstanding leadership.
Weaknesses: STANDARDIZES SCORES! I took four SATs and two ACTs but should have studied a lot more than I did. This caused me a lot of stress waiting for decision, knowing that my scores were dead average compared to last year’s stats.
Why you think you were accepted: In-state and outstanding extracurricular/leadership
Where else? I only applied to App (accepted) and NC State (releases tomorrow).

General Comments:
In staters: boost your GPA by taking honors classes online over the summer through NCVPS. Junior girls, look into Tar Heel Girls State. It is an INCREDIBLE summer workshop, whether you are interested in politics or not.

Reflection

Strengths: probably my standardized tests or the essays. Others of mine were not extraordinary enough to distinguish myself from other Chinese applicant, I think.

Reflection

Strengths: The fact that I’m basically a college student, my recs and essays
Weaknesses: DEFINITELY my test scores and my GPA. so so crappy, the EA pool was incredible this year.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I definitely think I was deferred because of my grades. I had two semesters of a lot of B’s because I was really depressed (not mentioned anywhere on my app), and I think they want to see how my senior year is going. luckily I’m medicated now and I made straight A’s last semester so we’ll see. Probably not rejected because I’m Latina and In-state
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted at Meredith College with a 20k/year scholarship (biggest one that you don’t have to compete for!), waiting on NCSU in March, a couple other safeties like UNCC and ECU but I don’t care about them

General Comments : I was crushed when I saw I was deferred. I was half expecting it due to my GPA and scores, but it hurt a lot. Luckily I retook both tests and did better and my GPA has went up. I am hoping it is enough because you all on this thread are insanely smart and I’m lucky they didn’t outright reject me! If you all think I will be accepted during the RD round please let me know, the waiting was agonizing and I need that glimmer of hope. Good luck to all of the other deferred students, and congrats to the accepted ones!

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college, early college student, good grades. I took al honors high school classes, and taking so many college courses definitely gave me a leg up. I honestly was confident applying, and I was accepted, but then reading some of the profiles on here made me feel lucky to be accepted. I haven’t done summer programs at Duke or Princeton but I’ve been consistent with my grades and activities. Best of luck to y’all that were deferred!
