UNC Honors Program Invitation?

I recently received a packet for the UNC Honors Program, and in it, was a letter stating they have reserved a place for me in the honors program.

Did anyone else receive this letter? How many people receive this letter?

Check out the thread entitled “Honors” near the bottom of this page.

so all of the honors program invites are already out??

For all of the ED applicants, they are. However, for ED and RD, they only invite about 275 or so. You can always apply once you get into the school.

I called admissions and they said they send out more Honors invites everyday

Hmm… Those are probably for RD applicants, but I may be wrong. I know that all of the kids at Scholarship Day were invited to the honors program, and that took place last week. There were 130 students or so there. It just seems to me like they’d have figured out all of the ED applicants earlier.

Would they send an Honors invite to an RD applicant before they had been accepted?

In a sense, yes. If you’re invited to Scholarship Day–which they do send out before acceptance letters–you’re definitely in the honors program.

Mr. Meredith told us that Honors program invitations usually follow admissions notifications by 10 days. He didn’t say anything about sending them out on a “staggered” basis–he made it seem as if they were all sent out at once. I could be VERY wrong, but well, that’s how I interpreted it. I got my invitation about 11 days after decisions were posted online, so this seemed right to me.

I know that they had issues with some applicants and weren’t able to read their applicants before January 31st. Maybe they’re still sorting out those applications and the honors committee is inviting those people on an individual basis? That could be a possibility.

Guys, really, if you’re in the Honors program, you have first crack at honors classes and can request an honors roommate. They typically put those people who request this in Cobb, I believe. However, ANYONE can take honors classes. And also, ANYONE can graduate with honors as long as they write a senior thesis. You don’t get a special diploma or anything if you’re in the honors program… just first pick at the classes.

So, really, if you haven’t heard anything, don’t sweat it. :] If they are really still sending out invites, then there’s definitely hope (mainly for ED)! And, you CAN apply once you matriculate.

Good luck, guys! I know you’ll enjoy your time at Chapel Hill regardless. I’m not too thrilled about writing a thesis, anyhow. ;P

Is there going to be a scholarship day for RD applicants? If so, any idea when invites might go out (if they haven’t already)?

The lady at admissions specifically asked was I an EA applicant and Said yes. But it’s okay. If I’m not invited which I doubt I was, I will just apply when the time comes!

Somewhere I read that 200 kids are admitted to Honors as new freshmen.

What exactly is Scholarship Day? How do you find out about it? I assume it is for those who are receiving scholarships?

Yes, there is a Scholarship Day for RD applicants; I’m not positive, but I think it’s sometime in late March. I’m not sure as to whether or not invitations have been sent, but you’ll be able to see it in the “My Event Invitations” section of your portal whenever they decide to invite you. That’s the easiest way to check.

Yep, UNC hopes to have about 200 new honors freshmen every year. However, they invite more students than this to the program–chances are that every student they invite will NOT matriculate. At the first Scholarship Day, there were 130 applicants. I’m assuming that the second one will have a similar amount.

If you’re wanting to know exactly what Scholarship Day entails, go here: [Scholarship Day](http://www.admissions.unc.edu/scholarshipday/) The event was really nice, and I enjoyed the discussion. The catered food was AWESOME, which was also a plus. :]

Everyone that is at Scholarship Day receives a scholarship; the amount of the scholarship depends on how much they like you, pretty much. At the event, they’re trying to find good “matches” for their different merit scholarships (they have five or six). If you put in any effort whatsoever during the event, basically, you get something. I think they said they had one or two in the history of the ordeal that didn’t get any money–it was obvious that those kids hated Chapel Hill and didn’t want to be there.

Also, everyone at Scholarship Day is invited to the Honors program. For sure.
