UNC Honors Waitlist?

I received a letter from UNC today (OOS) saying that though they couldn't offer me a spot in the honors college right now, but if I enrolled, I could come talk to them, take a honors course, and apply to honors second semester. Anyone else receive a letter like this, or the chances of being accepted to the honors program second semester? Seems real fishy haha

no dont worry, it is very hard to get into honors from the start (limited space) but easier after that.

It isn't fishy at all. You can take honors classes without being in the program. And I actually was accepted into the program at the beginning of this semester.

First of all it is an honors program not honors college and the distinctions are important. There aren't honors dorms or honors dining halls etc as there are at some schools.

Anyone can take honors classes if there is space available in the class. As others have also said anyone can apply for second semester or even sophomore admission to the program. Most people have a hard time taking honors classes after sophomore year and certainly after junior year due to finding classes that would work within a given major's requirements.

Last, you do not have to be in the honors program to graduate with honors. Graduating with honors requires writing a thesis; being in the honors program does not.

I think they are trying to tell you that this year's class was even more highly competitive than usual and they don't want you to be discouraged or make a decision not to attend based on not getting into honors right away. I personally think that's a nice touch on their part and they obviously would like you to attend.

Ok, makes a lot more sense now, I was blowing it up way too much. The way the letter was written made it seem like a big deal, but it's really not. Thanks!

I wouldn't say that. It may not be a big deal in terms of prestige, but I would be kind of curious to know how many students received a letter like yours. I would guess that it wouldn't be too many.

It IS a big deal that they wait listed you....you sort of missed the point, They want you to know that they value you and hope that the fact that you are not going to be in honors right away won't dissuade you from attending UNC.

I got one too and tossed it in the recycling bin. :P
It sounded like a condolence letter for the rejection...no matter how nicely worded, it still stings.

The Honors Program is indeed a big deal at UNC! I didn't apply (I didn't know whether or not there was an application process), but I just got a big package in the mail offering me a spot in Honors Program..

oh come on. you got into unc and they're giving you a letter that they're not giving everyone. do you want them to send you chocolates and roses, too? take it as an IOU honors program acceptance - keep your GPA up the first semester and YOU WILL GET INTO IT THE SECOND SEMESTER. THAT is what the letter is saying. sheesh.

Thanks for the info cloying. I thought the letter was mailed to everyone NOT accepted into Honors. Of course I don't feel entitled to it and I am honored to have been accepted to UNC! D:

Cloying, I didn't mean it like that. The previous posters made it seem like everyone got letters like that. I'm honored if only selected people got it.
