is it a joke or serious, and what are the requirements and benefits? anyone in it?

I believe UNC Honors is one of the top 8 honors programs in the nation. If you are oos and make it into Honors, you will literally be among a handful from your state. And one of the great things about the UNC Honors Program is although it is very selective, the Honors classes are available to the entire UNC student body. I assume Honors Program students get first whack at the selection, but this makes the program very progressive imho.

My d is an incoming freshman and in the Honors Program. Her advantages so far...she already has her dorm assignment (Craige North) and her roommate, also an honors student. She was allowed to submit forms for housing and roommate preferences early and received a response within weeks. She has also has been allowed to register for two honors classes. The selection was fantastic....and she was asked to rank her top 4 within the Special Lit and Comp section and her top 5 or 6 within the Honors Seminars/Courses. She'll know if she got her top choices sometime within the next month or so I believe. Again, the courses, especially the seminars, seemed very interesting; she truly had a hard time putting a number one by a course. At CTOPS/registration, she'll have an Honors Advisor to help her with her schedule and with her degree plan.

I'm sure there are many more wonderful things about the program that existing students can discuss here...but these are our experiences so far.

so which comes first, acceptance to UNC and then the honors program? or do both occur simultaneously?

i'm pretty sure simultaneously.

only the top 200 students are admitted into it, though.

The first 200 students are admitted simultaneously. Many more students eventually graduate with honors, however, and I believe the final number is around 300-400. So even if you are not admitted as an honors student, you may still be able to become one if you maintain a high enough GPA and take the required number of honors courses.

sweet. :) works for me....

I was admitted to the Honors Program after my first semester as a freshman. Although it is quite selective for freshman admissions, it is very possible to be admitted as a second-semester freshman or sophomore if you have good grades. I had a 3.93 first-semester and was accepted, a friend of mine had a 3.8 and was too.

What classes did you take first semester laneb? And what was your work strategy to maintain your GPA?
