My dream is to become a NYC Wall Street banker. I have a 75% chance that I will be going to UNC in the fall of next year and I was wondering if there are any chances of making it to NYC after college. I know that UNC has a strong business program but does it stand a chance against Duke, Stern, or HYP? Suppose I obtain a high GPA(3.8+) with ec's and other internships, is UNC an option for those high NYC Banks? I would have gone somewhere better but my grades in sophomore year were pretty bad. :( Any Thoughts?

Bumpbumpbump

Is there any chance? Of course.

UNC grads get NYC I-banking jobs all the time. Just personally, I had friends at UNC who went to Goldman, BoA, Morgan Stanley, and Credit Suisse after graduation.

That said, Im sure its easier to get one of those jobs if youre coming from HYP, etc., but its still totally doable, especially if you do well.

In fact, you don’t need to major in business necessarily, and I’d be surprised if being competitive even requires a 3.8+. Some of my friends who got those jobs were not business majors, and I know for sure some of them didn’t have GPAs as high as a 3.8.

Do you know how much they make and if they did any internships during the summer?

I don’t know how much they make, but I’m sure easy it’s to find out via google.

Most (I think all?) of them did summer internships prior to senior year. My understanding is that’s typical. I’m pretty sure most of the major banks recruit on campus.

It’s never easy to score a job with a top investment bank, but most of them recruit at UNC. Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, UBS, Morgan Stanley, and especially BoA and Wells Fargo (who have major presences in Charlotte) all regularly hire Carolina grads. You’ll need elite credentials (high GPA, leadership, and internships) and you’ll need to network and interview well. But it can definitely be done. Being in the business school will help but is not necessary. You will definitely need a finance or i banking internship after your junior year and will almost certainly need to do something finance related after your sophomore year to set up your junior year internship. Take corporate finance early and probably do a few excel modelling classes.

I don’t speak from personal experience, but I am a junior in the B-school and know a large number of people who have received internships and full time offers at major Wall Street banks. This is generally what you’ll need to know, unless your dad is Lloyd Blankfein… In which case you needn’t worry.

Bottom line: unc is a good place to be if your goal is to go to Wall Street after graduating.

Starting salaries are typically low six figures, but you’ll be working about 100 hour weeks for a few years. That’s not an exaggeration. It’s a grind, but 3 years at a top firm, and you’re set. Message me if you have any more specific questions.

Thanks for the input guys. Are you guys talking about graduates who get a job at a wall street bank, or do you actually work ON wall street?
