UNC/Michigan/spring transfer?

I am a freshman at the University of Miami and I applied to several schools for transfer.

I recently was accepted to University of Michigan and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
I applied to Boston University and Northwestern U as well but have not heard back from them yet.

I didn't apply to higher ranked schools, like Cornell, USC, NYU, or Hopkins, because I really thought I had no shot of getting into them after getting rejected from all of those schools as a senior. But I was very surprised that I got into 2 very good schools now, and it is making me wonder if I should stay another semester at UM and apply to these schools as a spring transfer. I got a 3.7 GPA first semester and am now taking harder classes this semester and may end up with a 3.8-4.0

I didn't like Michigan when I visited because of the small college town, weather, and the students seemed to be nice but a tad-bit socially awkward (maybe its a midwest thing and I notice it since I was raised in Miami). I will visit Carolina if I end up not getting into Northwestern, but I would rather go to school at Cornell/USC/NYU over Carolina if I could, so would it be smart to stay another semester and give spring transfer a shot?

And could anyone expand on the social life of UNC, because some of my friends tell my that it is a dead state with not much to do but it seems to be a top ranked party school. Also, I am entering as a Biology major/pre-med, so how is the science program at UNC, are there hospitals nearby, lots of research opportunities?

UNC doesn’t do spring transfer. Only fall.

I think you have a shot @ NYU, based on your GPA at least… & UM is a pretty good school. (I’m transferring out of NYU and attending UNC next fall, lol)

Do your friends live in NC? Because if not, no offense to them but they don’t have any right to speak on it. NC is “slow-paced”… depending on where you are. It’s got a southern feel, in my opinion.

Also, Chapel Hill is a college town so a lot of the people there are Tarheel fans for one reason or another. Lots of school spirit.

I’ve moved around a lot and actually graduated in Florida, so I’ve been to Miami a couple times. Chapel Hill is definitely not that kind of environment.

I’m not sure I know what “weather” means in regards to Michigan but NYC usually has the same, or worse, weather as Chapel Hill on any given day. (Both of them are “saved” on my weather.com lol)

If you’re not into cold, you should probably stay in the area you’re at - or around there. Probably at most, as northern as Georgia.

FL doesn’t even seem to have seasons in my opinion lol.

What exactly are you leaving UM for? And why are you interested in schools like NYU?
Basically, what are you looking for?

The Bio major, Chem major and Pre-Med track are all quite rigorous at UNC.

Our medical school is #1 nationally ranked for primary care and #2 for family care. Several other top 10 speciality rankings.

There is a 803 bed hospital on campus. The UNC Health Care System is a not-for-profit integrated health care system, owned by the State of North Carolina and based in Chapel Hill. It exists to further the teaching mission of the University of North Carolina and to provide state-of-the-art patient care. A distinguishing characteristic of UNC Health Care is its association with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine, a nationally eminent research institution. This relationship gives UNC Health Care a powerful pathway for moving the results of biomedical research from medical school laboratories to patient care settings. UNC Health Care is governed by a board of directors appointed by the University of North Carolina.

UNC is a great place to go to school, lots of thing to do. The campus is beautiful (especially in the spring), the students are friendly and bright and the weather is mild. Many of our athletic teams are national championship caliber. Tarheels are passionate about our school and our teams. As noted above, the school spirit is absolutely fantastic here. I suspect your friends have not been here based upon their comments. Let me give you just one real life example… How many colleges do you know that hosts an annual Halloween party that attracts between 20k to 40k college aged party goers??? Check it out on YouTube. The town of Chapel Hill closes down Franklin Street for it!

FYI, NYU is not ranked higher than UNC. Also, USC, until recently, wasn’t either; in academic circles UNC is still seen as the superior university.

Very true @babytitain
NYU is one behind UNC.

I looked at rankings when trying to decide what colleges would be equal to or greater than NYU academically lol
