UNC Off campus for a freshman?

I have been thinking of rooming w/ couple of my friends from my HS off campus. Is it a good idea? It will help us save quite a lot of money and also better living overall I guess? I thought since most freshmen would be in south campus, why not just off campus w/ bigger rooms and all?

my only concern is if that will reduce my friend circle or anything like that. I will most likely own a bike and planning to rent one of the closest off campus housing.

Is this a good idea? what are the pros and cons from your perspective?

thnx

You’ll meet a lot more new people living on campus, which in my opinion, is part of the college experience.

But if that’s not what you’re interested in, go for it.

hmm…yeah i’m thinking of that a lot and trying to find an off campus housing which will let me stay almost all my time in the campus…but oh well let’s see

I feel like living on campus is important your freshman year. The kind of housing you say you are looking for will probably be expensive, because you can bet all the returning students do not want to spend too long getting to class.

Living off campus with friends from HS practically guarantees that your college experience will be a repeat/rehash of HS and will severely limit your personal growth, not to mention your social circle.

If you really want to live off campus, wait a year. Take advantage of the wonderful opportunity you have to meet new people and to expand your circle of friends beyond what it currently is.

It really is a bad mistake; don’t do it.

Additionally, any good housing close to campus has been rented since early last Spring which is when you have to start looking.

I agree with others in this thread that living off campus during your first year will be extremely socially limiting – it will be a lot harder to meet other first years.

Eadad is right, my son had to give notice in Jan if he would be keeping his apartment upon which the lease isn’t up until Aug! You have to look early.

Though none of my 3 kids liked dorm life, it still was good for them to do at least one year. They did meet many more people and made friends that lasted throughout college and beyond.
