I was recently accepted to both UNC and Wake Forest and have no idea which one I would rather attend. If you have any insight to either school I would love to hear it. Just some background info about me: I want to obtain a major in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry while taking pre-med requirements so that I can attend med school after.

go with which one you think you’d enjoy more. They’re both terrific, and about the same level in ranking

If location is any bearing in your decision, I would recommend UNC. I’m a senior in high school and I live in Winston-Salem, and I didn’t even consider applying to Wake just because it’s in Winston. Don’t get me wrong, the campus is BEAUTIFUL, and the academics are stellar, but there just isn’t much to do for college age people here. It’s a great place to grow up, but I simply cannot wait to move away. I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to continue living here any longer than they had to. Chapel Hill is so much more of a “college town”, and so much more fun. Also, if you’re in state, UNC will run you about 15k a year while Wake is around 40. Are you willing to pay that much more for a similar education in a less desirable spot?

Also, Wake is really really really preppy. The majority of the student body is southern old money. Wake is also dominated by greek life. I’m not saying this is a bad thing at all, but if you’re not this, it’s a lot easier to fit into UNC.

Thanks for your thoughts! I am from Wilmington, NC so I understand about wanting to get away but having the option to stay. Like you I didn’t even apply to UNCW. I am a pretty preppy person and I like southern people, but I want to have some fun in college as well.

The aspect of Wake that I like the most is the small population unlike UNC. I don’t know very much about either chem or pre-med program.

One thing to bear in mind is that by state regulation, the UNC undergrad population is about 85% in-state, while Wake is only 25% in-state with a truly national student body. As a Wake student in the '70s, I really enjoyed and appreciated the fact that my friends came from all parts of the country.

UNC is particularly strong in pre-med (UNC hospitals are literally located on the south end of the campus, with tons of medical research firms there as well). Also, UNC is much cheaper than Wake, particularly since you are in-state. Unless there is some compelling reason that would drive you to go to Wake, I would choose UNC.
