UNC Out-of state

Hi, I am a high school sophomore that currently resides in PA. I really want to go to UNC after high school. What does UNC look for in a student? Any tips?

Why would you want to go to UNC? Is it because it has a med school?

Google the Common Data Set for UNC (section C7) to see what they use for admission. Also look at its web site to see what is necessary to apply.

UNC has its class profile online. You can also check the UNC common data set. It is competitive for out of state admissions. In any event, I’d recommend against targeting one school – there are tons of great colleges out there.

I researched this for a student a couple years ago. If I remember correctly the admit rate for OOS was around 15% & average SAT was around 1400 (CR + M). I found a student newspaper article citing stats, but can not find it now.

Stats for fall 2014…

Admit rate
53% IS / 18% OOS

Average SAT CR
643 IS / 662 OOS

Average SAT Math
656 IS / 688 OOS

Average SAT Writing
635 IS / 671 OOOS

Average CR+M SAT
1299 IS / 1350 OOS

[ul][]Best public university in the South if you exclude Texas
[
]Great weather
[]Nice campus
[
]Great college town
[]Friendly people and a thriving social scene
[
]Long and interesting history (first public university founded in the US)
[]Tons of school spirit
[
]Cross-registration and an intense rivalry with another top university
[]Nearly unique among publics in offering financial aid to all admitted domestic students
[
]Noticeably smaller than many other flagship publics (18,000 undergrads, compared to 30,000+ at some)[/ul]

I don’t think it’s at all surprising someone would want to apply.
