UNC Shooting Victim

"I'm not really sure why Duke parents or faculty feel the need to steer this conversation a certain way, or to downplay what happened to this student, but that seems to be the case."

I'm really baffled by this statement.

ldmom06 and janieblue - I've requested clarification via PM. I want to assure you publicly, as a Duke faculty, that I am in NO WAY trying to downplay what happened to Eve Carson; in fact, my intent was to request that the thread in fact FOCUS on what happened to Eve Carson.

DukeEgr

You have ALWAYS served as a voice of reason on these threads.....there is another poster who has often lobbed vitriol at anything UNC that got things riled up on several occasions, I am sorry that you are being included in the response. I've tried on several occasions myself to redirect the focus of these posts so I thank you for your efforts as well.

As the parent of someone very close to Eve, I thank you and the Duke community in general for the outpouring of support, concern and love that you have shown to your UNC neighbors in this very difficult time.

DukeEgr: I agree with you that this is a thread about this particular UNC student, Eve Carson. It is not about Durham or Chapel Hill and the real or perceived criminal element in these towns, though I can certainly understand why this thread would go in that direction and touch on these broader issues.

I do get the sense, though, that there are people (Duke parents?) who have come on to this thread who want to make this solely about Durham vs Chapel Hill, or Duke vs UNC. That, I agree, is pointless and quite offensive.

Since the level of crime and the perceived (or real) escalation of crime was questioned here, I saw no problem with answering it as honestly as I could. Police have brought in experts to discuss whether this was a gang-related crime, or not. Gangs are prevalent in Durham. The suspect the Chapel Hill police are detaining/questioning was captured on a street in Durham, not far from Duke's campus. That's a fact that can't be ignored.

Again, for any poster to come on here and pretend that Durham doesn't have a problem, or to make this all about Durham vs Chapel Hill (with relation to crime) is offensive, I agree.

So if that's what you were pointing out and requesting that we remember what the focus is here-- I completely agree, and I appreciate your efforts to steer the thread. I apologize if I "read" you wrong.

Again, I doubt discussion of the broader issues can (or should) be censored, but making this all about UNC vs Duke or Durham vs Chapel Hill? I agree-- that's annoying, offensive, and completely unnecessary.

Thanks.

As matter of interest, there appears to be some news regarding a shootout with a second suspect.

Okay, so they have charged him it appears. Great.

Demario James Atwater, 21, is charged with first-degree murder in the UNC student leader's slaying.
Durham police detained him Wednesday morning and turned him over to Chapel Hill police, who were questioning him Wednesday, sources tell WRAL.
The man was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment of an undisclosed ailment Wednesday before being returned to the Chapel Hill Police Department, sources said.

man..they shouldnt be taken to hospital./..this ppl are not human..they should be left to rot w/o food and water..

well...yea...its vague to make it duke vs unc as both lost 2 bright students in the last couple of months. I don't know about what response i will receive but me and my whole family (also some extended)..were having a discussion last weekend and everybody that for a girl (doesn't matter a girl or a boy) to be alone wherever at 4.30-5.00 in the morning is kind of scary (and a little stupid).

Looks like this guy had a record, and it appears he had been arrested for breaking and entering, and actually had a court date in Wake County (Raleigh) as recently as March 3, where/when he must have been released. That was a grave mistake.

^^^ I agree...a BIGGG mistake.
I still can't stop thinking about how the family must be feeling. :(

Looks like the other guy "at large" (Lovett?) is armed and dangerous-- is this the person in the current "stand-off?" -- is 17 years old. How does a person get that way in 17 short years?

^^^where did u see the pics?

I agree Janie, and unfortunately all I come up with is parenting (or rather lack of).

Vickpick, it is so sad that you are probably right about being out at that time in the morning. However, I remember (back in my youth) when the kids were little, I would go out to run at 5am--so I could be back before husband left for work. Also, my son now in Chapel Hill often gets up and goes to the library by 5am or he goes early to gym to work out before classes. It is a sad commentary on life in US when we have to be afraid to be out after dark.

The ages of the alleged perpetrators in the most recent murders are staggering - and similar. 17 and 21 in this case; 19 and 20 (with two 14 year old robbery accomplices!) in Abhijit Mahato's murder; 23 in the Lauren Burk murder.

I saw there was a press conference but can't pick it up here - any new details come out?

Thanks for the updates. I hope nobody gets hurt.

Lovette, believed to be the driver in the ATM photo

Does anyone have info as to where this shootout is taking place? Like streets or an address?

duke egr

there's a standoff with SWAT officers at the Durham house live on WRAL.com right now....

Apparently house is owned by Lovette's grandmother and she operates a day care center out of the house......

SWAT is standing down and leaving...no explanation as of yet....
