what are the best programs avalible at unc as far as majors are concerned?

the journalism and business schools are both nationally recognized

I'd say everything is top-notch. Except maybe the engineering programs, lol.

journalism is #3/#4, undergrad business #5, primary care #2, public health #1 (tied w/harvard), pharmacy #3, informational sciences #1

yeah..not engineering LOL. i dont think we even have an engineering major...do we?

misstinax3-j/w, where did you get those numbers from? thanks

i got them from us news' report on individual majors =] i am certain those numbers are correct, although i should double check on the pharmacy ranking

oh cool...if it wouldnt be a convenience could you possibly post biochemistry, chemsitry and math rankings

sorry, i made a mistake, UNC is actually tied with harvard for number TWO for public health, not #1

i got these rankings online, and i dont have the premium account lol or whatever that you need to see the full list of rankings for all the majors

for biochem/chem/math, the typical top schools were MIT/caltech/stanford/berkeley

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/phdsci/phdsciindex_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/phdsci/phdsciindex_brief.php</a></p>

sorry if people were looking for undergrad info..as you can see, a lot of these are grad school rankings. journalism/business are top 5 for undergrad, though.

and kaplan ranked UNC the "hottest school for health professions" in 2005

oh its grad rankings...thanks looking for undergrad

The chemistry department at UNC is extremely strong. I think that you will find that undergraduate study in chemistry or biochemistry to be challenging. UNC is clearly a tier 1 research university when it comes to chemistry.

The math department is not particularly strong. The average age of professors in the department is quite high. While instruction in lower-level classes, say up to and including differential equations, is excellent, when you go beyond that, you often encounter crazy old professors. If you are interested in a degree in mathematics and you are a top student, perhaps UNC isn't the school for you.

right now i'm more interested in chemistry; i'm planning on majoring in chemistry and business administration if i can

I've heard great things from my friends in the Chem depatment. For pre-med and things of that nature, it seems that going to UNC will definitely give you a leg up. But it's true, misstina, that we don't have an Engineering major. :)

When my brother took a math course (maybe I should preface this by saying that my brother is not a big math person) he was very disappointed by his TA. He said she could barely speak English and did little to help students outside of class. I was hesitant to say that, though, because my brother and I have somewhat different takes on many people we've encountered in life, to put it lightly. But it seems like other people feel that the math department isn't super strong.
