UNC Transfer...do I have a shot?

I am currently a sophomore at Appalachian State University. I have dreamed of going to Carolina since before I can remember. I hope to transfer for the Fall 2011, what do you think my chances are?

HS: I was a IB Diploma student at an extremely competitive high school. Freshman and Sophomore year I got a lot of Cs. Junior year I got all As and Bs and one C in my IB English class. Senior year I got all As and Bs. I was one of 35 students at a school of 3500 to graduate having completed all the course requirements to be considered an IB Diploma student. In the end, I think I had something like a 4.1 weighted, but I was not even top 25%.

SATs: 680 Math, 670 Reading, 680 Writing (2010 total...should I retake?)

I think I had like 9 AP credits (I did not take school seriously until I realized I was ruining my dream. I slept through all of my IB tests so I will not be submitting any of those scores)

I got straight up denied from Carolina...by that point I guess I saw it coming.

I spent my freshman year at Appalachian State University. First Semester I dropped all of the General Education classes my counselor signed me up for and took classes that interested me and I knew I would find challenging. Two of them were junior level classes, in which I was the only freshman. I kept one gen ed class. I ended up getting all As and a B in the gen ed class because I accidentally slept through one of four tests and got a zero. Second semester I got 3 As and two A- s (in Calculus and Global Nutrition and Emerging Health Challenges). This year my counselor yelled at me and pushed me into taking a full schedule of Gen Ed courses. I have never been more miserable. My classes are way too easy, I never have homework or write papers, my only trouble is because I am not stimulated I have trouble going to class. I think I will end up with a 3.0 but it depends whether my teacher lets me make up a test I slept through today, if not I could fail the class.

SO

College GPA : currently 3.81
after this semester...between 3.2 and 3.7 (depends)

Next semester I am studying abroad in Prague with a digital photography program through NC State University. I have to transfer back into App if I want to come back so I figured I might give UNC another shot.

Think I have a chance? (I want to major in Biology but if there is some other major that would give me a better shot I would definitely consider it)

I don’t have an answer, although frankly your SAT scores seem pretty darned good to me (certainly within UNC’s range).

Do you really totally hate App State, though? My son just received a letter from App State touting its full-ride scholarships. That’s the magic buzz-phrase for us parental units: “full ride”! As soon as a college mentions “full ride,” my ears perk up, LOL.

As in-staters, we have heard good and bad things about App State – but mostly good, especially from folks who actually went there.

But, needless to say, I sympathize with your misery in the gen-ed classes. Is there any possible way to place out of them for next semester? Could you get the dean of your department to override your adviser’s bad advice?

I am not at all discouraging you from re-applying to Chapel Hill – far from it; I am the anti-naysayer queen, LOL. My philosophy is: Nothing ventured, nothing gained! But, on the off-chance that it doesn’t work out, is there any way to salvage your experience at Appalachian State?

P.S. For all kids discouraged by rejections, here’s an anecdote I heard long ago. It seems that when Guiseppe Verdi, the celebrated opera composer, was young and unknown, he applied to the Milan Conservatory. He was flatly rejected. Decades later, when Verdi was famous worldwide, the Milan Conservatory approached him. It seems they wanted to rename their school after him – the Guiseppe Verdi Conservatory. Verdi told them to stick it in their ear. (Except that he said it in Italian, of course.)

I love that story. :)
