UNC Transfer Hopeful

I'm a current academic sophomore at a local community college. Going to UNC has been a dream of mine that I want to make a reality. My high school grades weren't the best and I wasn't a competitive applicant out of high school. I'm going to be applying to UNC as a Junior transfer student for Fall of 2014 semester (as well as NC State and UNCG).

Current college GPA: 3.67 (I'm really worried that this will hurt me)

Volunteer work: Over 200+ hours at UNC Hospitals

Honors: Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Work: Currently an Intern at AT&T working roughly 20 hours a week

High School GPA: 2.8 or 2.9

SAT scores: Not going to submit them as they are optional for Junior transfers (will this hurt me?)

Letters of Recommendation: I'm fairly confident that I can get strong letters of recommendation.

Essays: I'm extremely confident that I can write a strong essay(s).

Major: Communication

Other information: My sister is a UNC alum and I'm a minority (not sure if any of this stuff helps).

I was hoping for some honest feedback in terms of my chances. I'm worried my poor performance in high school will haunt me. What can I do to build a stronger application? Also, I will have only 55 credits by the end of this upcoming Spring 2014 semester. Does UNC take summer classes into consideration? I read that you need 60 credits to transfer as a Junior. Thanks everyone!

I know I already told you this on the actual UNC thread, but I think you’re almost guaranteed. Your HS performance will not hurt you because of the amount of credits you’ve completed. The fact you’re applying as a junior gives you a much better chance and it means they will barely look at your HS transcripts. They basically just want them to see that you graduated. Your combination of EC’s, 200+ hrs at UNC hospitals, PTK, etc. makes you a very strong applicant. I would be very surprised if you weren’t accepted. Good luck!

EDIT: as for the last part about credits, they mean that you need 60 credits when you start in the Fall. That means anything you take up until then will count towards that 60, summer included.

I’d recommend you search for the previous UNC transfer threads to get an idea on what GPA’s were accepted, and compare them to yours. Here’s a few:
