UNC Transfer Waitlist 2019

@hbh2017 i was denied  i know i dont belong in this thread lol i just figured someone would be likely to appeal!

@girlypop13
Im pretty sure the appeal is pretty much only for people who had an actual error, not just something like a change in GPA. I took a look at it because I was curious and they’re pretty strict about what can and can’t be appealed.

@jackson1301 oh okay thats good to know, thank you! i know selective schools like ucla have a pretty intense appeal process, its kind of like a second-chance application there and i was hoping unc’s would be the same. would you mind sharing where you read about it?

Essentially an appeal is for if you think the commitee made a mistake. Id be wary of doing an appeal just to appeal, and would likely just reapply next year if youre a sophomore.

@Jackson1031 @girlypop13 She is applying as a junior tho so this is her last chance. If I were you I would give it a shot but relook over your entire application to give enough reasons for the appeal. I feel like the grade change alone might not make such a bit influence.

Do you guys think they put a lot of weight on the standardized exam scores? That is the weakest part of my application and I think is the major factor of why I got waitlisted. I applied last year as an incoming freshman but I was being considered as an out of state student because I had just moved to NC and so it was virtually impossible to get in with my stats comparing with so many amazing applicants from the other 49 states.

Ya I have kind of a unique situation… I met with admissions last year and was told that my decision came down to my gpa. I retook several classes to raise it but ended up messing up big time in one of my classes, which brought my gpa down even lower than it was the first time I applied. I’m pretty convinced that that grade was the most debilitating factor of my app, but I could be wrong. I am a junior so I guess I really just want to do this to know that I did everything I possibly could. Thanks for the advice you guys and I’m sending good vibes that you’ll both get off the waitlist! @allmightychemist @jackson1031

@allmightychemist and to answer your post, something the admissions committee told me last summer was that a.) if you took the exams a long time ago, they won’t consider them as much and b.) when the decisions get tough (clearly at that point since you’re waitlisted) they look further into everything. that’s a big reason why soph applicants have to send their high school transcripts.

i took both exams three years ago and was told they wouldn’t weigh heavily as a deciding factor.

@girlypop13 Ok thanks. In your case since you are applying as a junior, so yes they don’t even require you to even submit the standardized test score but for freshman / sophomore transfers they do. In that case would it still not be heavily weighted or decided on? Also I took the ACT last year my senior year of high school…so… ya it is recent.

@allmightychemist well it was last summer; i was applying as a sophomore applicant then. i believe that in your case it would be an important factor, seeing as you took the exam so recently

I was waitlisted as well :frowning: I am an in-state student–currently at NC State. I applied as a freshman since not all my credits would transfer over and someone in admissions told my college counselor that applying as a freshman would be easier since they have more spots (not sure if that is totally accurate since i got waitlisted). My high school didn’t calculate gpas, so not sure what mine is but i mostly got A’s and B’s with an exception of 2 C’s senior year which i think screwed me over a little bit. My ACT was a 27 superscore. My gpa last semester at State was a 3.714 (15 credits), but not sure if i’m going to be able to keep that up this semester since I’m taking psych, bio, and sociology all at the same time (big mistake on my part). I only had 2 extracurriculars this year at state (club lacrosse and volunteering as a coach at high school lacrosse tournaments, but my HS EC were head of prom committee, co-editor of fashion magazine, 2 study abroad programs, internship at a boutique, and varsity lacrosse (I started the team). I had good rec’s one from my Econ professor and one from a family friend who started the entrepreneurship program at UNC. I’m definitely happy that I got waitlisted cause at least I wasn’t denied, but a little bummed because i know my chances of getting off the waitlist are very slim.

I’m really worried that i’m going to end with a lower gpa (like a 3.5 or 3.6). Do you guys think that it could hurt me at all or ruin my chances of getting in off the waitlist? Also, do you think that having connections at unc would help get off the waitlist?

I’m really hoping for the best for all of us!

@ked177 why do you want to transfer from nc state?

@ked177 Hey! I believe that since we were all waitlisted we were somehow in one way or another equally eligible to get it. So in my opinion I think they would take the spring’s transcript into consideration as that would be the newest piece of evidence they could use to compare all of us. But also take into account the thought that they said they will revaluate all of us again so I don’t know how much weight they might put into the transcript in comparison to the rest of the application that we did.

And other juniors waitlisted? What are your other options if you do not get into UNC?

@hbh2017 Since your in an NC community college don’t they have a route or a program that gets you in a certain school? Example: Wake Tech has a thing with NC State… CPCC has a thing with UNCC. I know many who are currently in community colleges and got into certain schools because it is part of their route.

@hbh2017 I thought I’m majoring in fashion textile management but realized that i’m more interested in journalism. Also, i like the people and vibe more at UNC.

Does anyone know how many people accepted a spot on the transfer waitlist? Does anyone have any updates from admissions?

Does anyone have any updates on transfer waitlist? Do you think anyone will get in off transfer waitlist? Any movement on first year waitlist?

I don’t believe anyone has been taken off the waitlist yet since the last day for accepted transfer students to enroll is May 15th. I am keeping up hope that some of us will be taken off the waitlist after that date. If you look at the transfer waitlist thread from 2018 you can see that some students began hearing back in late May/ early June of last year.

I just got my grades back for this semester (3.133) and i didn’t do as well as i did last semester (3.714). My overall gpa is a 3.433 and i’m really worried i just ruined any chances that i had of getting in off the waitlist. I did take way harder classes this semester so that’s why my gpa is a lot lower this semester so i’m just hoping Carolina will see that and take it into consideration.
