UNC v NCSU?

Okay, I have been accepted into both UNC and State. I really want to major in communications and I know that UNC has a great journalism/communications program. plus, the campus is gorgeous and I really like it there. but, NCSU invited me into their University Scholars program. and I like their campus, too. NCSU would probably give me more money since competition isn't as tough as UNC and since I'd been in this great program. Which do I choose? Which would be better for me?

I think that, without a really compelling reason to choose NC State, you should choose UNC Chapel Hill.

A compelling reason might be that you want to do engineering (not applicable in your case), or if there’s a huge financial difference.

Assuming there isn’t a big money difference, I’d say the choice is clear.

You have to make the decision based on what is more important to you. I am in the same situation as you- invited to Honors college at NCSU and scholarship vs no Honors college and no scholarship at UNC. The competition is stronger at UNC than at NCSU for those awards. So, do I go to NCSU where I can be in honors and maybe be a medium size fish in a large pond, or to UNC where I will likely be a much smaller fish in a much more competitive pond? I plan to major in a science and perhaps (though not definitely) pursue pharmacy school. Both schools have a great science program and good admission rate to med schools. I visited both and was much more comfortable at UNC. I like the “homey” feel of the campus. For me, the choice became evident- I didn’t really get a “feel” for NCSU like I did at UNC. So I am willing to give up the Honors program to go somewhere that excites and appeals to me. Was that the right decision? I guess we will see in four years. What will be the right decision for you? Only you can tell after you weigh your options. Good luck!

Each has its benefits. If you’re applying to graduate school, it’s probably a tad bit easier to maintain a good GPA at State, especially since CH is known for being overly difficult. I’m currently on the waiting list at UNC, but I’ll be in the scholars program at NC State (I went ahead and enrolled, but I don’t know 1000% sure yet what I’ll do if CH accepts me, even though that’s where I really really wanted to go). It just depends on what you want to do, but you will get a good education at either place.

For communications, I’d recommend UNC without question. The journalism and communications school is amazing here and you’d really be missing out if you turned it down to go to State. There are some programs at both schools that are pretty comparable and that you’d be fine going through at either school, but communications isn’t one of them.

UNC is the clear choice if you want to go into communications. Additionally, UNC has a much better national reputation than State.

Agreed. Our comm department is fantastic and there are very solid post grad opportunities. My brother was a comm major here and after he graduated went and worked with Lion’s Gate and Sony out in LA through some UNC alumni.

I know it’s very flattering that NCSU invited you to that program, but that’s not going to make a huge difference in your educational experience.
