Okay, I have been accepted into both UNC and State. I really want to major in communications and I know that UNC has a great journalism/communications program. plus, the campus is gorgeous and I really like it there. but, NCSU invited me into their University Scholars program. and I like their campus, too. NCSU would probably give me more money since competition isn't as tough as UNC and since I'd been in this great program. Which do I choose? Which would be better for me?

My son picked NC State over Chapel Hill. Primary reason was major (engineering) but he likes NC State campus and the people. He felt more comfortable and like himself at NC State (very subjective so not sure that is much help) so which do you like better? Where so you see yourself attending and fitting in? Make sure you are happy with where YOU want to go and choose accordingly.

My son is in the same situation. He wants to become an MD and has been accepted to NC State and UNC. He and I toured both schools and I was more impressed with NC State as far as the academic support he would receive. He’s waiting to hear back from Duke and Wake before he makes his final decision. Pitt has accepted him into their honors college and offered 10k scholarship. Pitt is a fine school but I suspect he will choose an instate school.

You will get a fine education at either school. Most will say that Carolina is has more prestige and brand name value. The thing to remember is that prestige doesn’t go to class with you, live in the dorm or eat with you in the cafeteria. It’s really all about where you feel you fit in the best and are most comfortable.

For my son (NCSU '09) it was hands down NCSU for him because he liked the atmosphere and people (laid back, regular guy/girl people). He also liked Raleigh more then Chapel Hill. Everyone raves about what a great town Chapel Hill is but for S after visiting friends at UNC fairly often over his 4 years at NCSU, he felt that Franklin St. bars with all the Greek presence got really old after awhile. He was always happy to return “home” to Raleigh. He liked the bigger city far better.
Of course I’m sure those who attend Carolina love their town too.
My S had the time of his life at NCSU, a great four years. He wouldn’t change a thing if he had to do it over again.
So it’s really all about what feels the best to you and where you feel you will be happy for four years. Both are good schools.
Congrats on being able to have great choices
