Hey, I hope everyone is safe in such trying times
I am super confused between Emory, UNC, and WashU and would love feedback on the same! I am going in undeclared but in general will major in the social sciences. The possible majors I have in mind are English, Law, Sports Management and Economics. I love watching sports and need a good balance of school spirit, academics and a social life.
I like Emory, WashU and UNC equally and can’t seem to decide which two have cons that are dealbreakers for me; Emory with its lack of football team and school spirit, UNC with its relatively larger size, or WashU with the weather and minimal attention given to sports.
Please help me because my mind is honestly in shambles right now!
Is cost a factor in making your decision ?
It is not. The main factors I am considering are academics, school spirit, sports culture and employment opportunities after college.
School spirit & sports culture favor UNC.
Academics favor WashUStL & Emory.
Employment opportunities after graduation depend in large part upon internships during the course of one’s undergraduate journey = probably equal for all three.
My daughter will be freshman at Emory this fall. Students there are extremely happy (as at most schools), but the few that are not I think generally cite the same flaw- school spirit (code for no sports). I don’t understand why they went there knowing that it lacks that, but people keep making that mistake. Academics are obviously the priority, but there are other factors. If sports and that classic college vibe are important to you, I would prob go to UNC. Academics and prestige are right up there. Yes, it is big, but getting involved in clubs can break a big school down.
Wash U is generally thought of as “better” than Emory. It’s ranked a bit higher and has higher test scores, so it’s more selective in that respect. Personally I would choose Emory over Wash U any day. Better city, better weather, and way more diversity.
