Hey everyone! I find myself in a difficult situation. I was accepted OOS EA to UNC and RD to Georgetown. Georgetown was my first choice for a very, very long time, but then I visited UNC and fell in love. Now I'm not sure what to do. Just to add in to the confusion, I was also accepted OOS to UVA. Any input on choosing between these schools? Georgetown has (what seems like) the perfect program for what I want to major in, but I loved the atmosphere on the UNC campus (everyone seemed so friendly, laid back, and HAPPY). Please help!

go to UNC... I did not really like georgetown when i visited. If I were you, the real struggle would be between unc and uva. Just my 2 cents

My S is looking at the same choice and toss in GW as well. I will add some more later today as I need to go off to a few meetings. The only downfall that UNC has for him is that it may be too close to home. Other than that, we are basically waiting for all FA packages to be complete to see if any get eliminated.

Here are some thoughts:
1. If it is offered, consider doing an overnight in the dorms with each school. D has been doing this and it really has revealed a lot about each of her possibilities. I really don't think you can get a good feel with just going to the admitted student day tours or walking about the campus. The tours have all been exciting and the kids doing the tours have been great so there is no real comparison we can make. The marketing is so slick!

Talk to a faculty member in your intended major or in the freshman studies series.

Ask people to PM you about the schools. I think you could get better data through a PM. Some alumni and students can get rabid if you post anything negative about their school and many students will hesitate responding to you if they feel they might get attacked on the open boards.

Facebook and other social networking sites for your choices can give you more of an insider's view.

Eat lunch in the cafeteria at each school and observe.
Good luck. You have some great choices!

We have visited both schools and I really like them both. Although we live in Raleigh, I will try to be impartial. I agree with Hornet and the advice given. You have to visit, if possible, to get a good understanding. I know that UNC does offer overnights during their admitted students days. They also schedule classes for them to attend (my S enjoyed this part of it). They also make available quite a multitude of current students from Freshman to Seniors to talk about the school and any question or concerns you may have. And they take care of the parents as well, making sure that they focus on the main points that each group is more interested in. To be honest, UNC made it very difficult for my S to say no. He was ready to go to Washington DC until we visited Chapel Hill. Now he is not so sure.

Georgetown is a very nice school, and if you are politically active, there is not a better place to be IMHO other than maybe GW. Because of its location, GT is a smaller tighter campus, seems that many of the buildings are on top of each other, and they continue to build new buildings in a small space. I did not like that about the school, it does not have that open campus feel that you get at UNC. Goergetown the town is really nice with all of its restaurants and shops. Again IMO I would prefer that to Chapel Hill although CH has a nice feel to it.

Food wise, and this is from only a couple of meals at each school, UNC by far has a better variety, quality and flexibility.

If you like big time sports, then again UNC hands down. Overall very high quality in all the sports both men and women. The stadium and arena are right in the middle of campus, just a short walk from the dorms.

Great choices to have. You can't go wrong either way. It really should come down to what your major is, if you like the big city vs. college town, weather also comes into play and of course money.

Good luck, have fun.

If you eat, sleep, and breathe politics, if you vomit politics, if you sweat politics, and if you don't care at all about money - GW or Georgetown.

If you eat, sleep, and breathe politics but at the same time want a liiiiittle more academic diversity and are thinking about grad school and thus probably want to spend less, then perhaps UNC or UVA.

There's no way that the students here are politically active as they would be at Georgetown or GW, despite the fact that the students here are cool and a good number of them are really into it. I had to choose between GW and UNC, and it came down to the fact that UNC has better liberal arts and GW, even with its highest scholarship, was still insanely expensive. That isn't even to say that UNC doesn't have a lot to offer in terms of poli sci/international studies, etc., we have a really cool major called "Peace War and Defense," but if that is your THING, then that's a tough choice to make.

cloying... really "Peace War and Defense," sounds exactly want my S would enjoy. I'll have to let him know about it. He is currently set on being a Poli sci major and he only looked at schools that had good programs. UNC fit that bill. If this is a major, then he will be happy to know that. Thanks!

Warning: GU is in a VERY crowded area. If you like TONS of people (not so much on campus, but the immediate vicinity), then GU is awesome. If you like more openness, UNC wins.

GU is probably more "prestigious," but then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
