UNC vs Michigan

Trying to decide between UNC and U of M. I am in the Michigan honors program, but not UNCs. I will probably study bio and hope to go to Med school. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

if moneys not an issue, go to michigan. if it is, go to unc. uncs a lot cheaper

unc has better weather

UNC has a better basketball team

Michigan is the better choice. Don't listen to these morons try to use basketball and weather as selling points. UNC does not have a great pre-med or biology program. Clearly the better choice is Michigan especially if you were accepted into the honors program there. Good Luck in your decision.

sicnarf315: Aren't you trying to get off the waitlist at UNC? I've noticed on all these threads where students are deciding between UNC and another school, you've encouraged each and every one to go to the other school. You wouldn't be doing that for purely selfish reasons now, would you? :)

Now Jack where are you getting this information... Ok well maybe my responses are somewhat biases.

hey sicnarf you have rubbed me the wrong way. i was giving that kid honest opinions on tech and unc, and i was joking about the weather, its pretty obvious who has better weather. as for referring to me as a moron, apparently you speak for yourself as I have been accepted to UNC not once, but TWICE now. ha

"UNC does not have a great pre-med or biology program."

Where in the world do you get YOUR information? UNC has a very strong Biology program (sciences in general) with a strong pre med emphasis. UNC's med school is currently # 2 nationally in Family Practice. Many of your recent posts sounds like you are disgruntled and unhappy about a UNC decision. I hope that isn't the case. People are trying to get as objective a response as could be expected from a UNC thread when they post here so if you can, please try to limit the vitriol.

Michigan is a great school. It is HUGE by comparison and even with honors you will have many more large classes over four years than at UNC. That may not be a concern for you, but as a parent I don't want to be paying for TAs and not have my son or daughter have the exposure to tenured faculty as early on as possible. I know a CC parent whose freshman son has done research all year for one of the top econ professors on UNC's campus....as a freshman!

You can't make a bad decision academically because they will both serve you well, are equally recognized by grad and professional schools and have great tradition associated with each.

Look at the academics as a tie because in the real world it is. Now look at all the other things ie cost, size, location, how they "felt" when you visited them because these tangibles and intangibles are really what should be the decision makers for you, not some silly ranking that is arbitrary at best.

I keep reading here and there that UNC has a great Bio & pre-med program. Well not a real on-paper "program" for the latter, but you get the idea. Am I missing something?? Maybe I just don't have a good point of reference. I'm not saying it's bad, but I feel it's more or less average-ish.

And being in the UNC's honors program is not that big of a deal (though I think the school tries to make it sound that way) - so I don't think that should factor in your decision. You can take honors classes and graduate with honors (write a senior thesis) without being in the honors program.
