i'm having a really hard time deciding between unc and northwestern university! I am not sure what I want to major in at all yet, so here are some pros and cons, and if you have any insight, please share! thank you so much!

UNC
pros--in state tuition because my mom is a resident there, basketball!, weather, the city/area is interesting
cons--really big school (will I feel lost or like just a number?), greek life is big (I don't want a school with a large percentage of greek life), i'm an out of state-er (will it be hard to fit in at all if I'm not used to the big university party life, where people from north carolina high schools know each other?)

NORTHWESTERN
pros--great academics, evanston/chicago!, in the midwest (i'm from saint louis, so it would be nice to be somewhat close to home)
cons--SUPER expensive, cold weather

I think the main thing is cost, and the type of students that go to these schools, because it was hard for me to get a overall vibe of the student body at northwestern. I know both of these schools are large so that there will be a group of friends at either for me, though. So really, any stories, information, or advice on these two schools would be greatly appeciated!

UNC has great academics as well. I’m an in-state student, but I’ve heard from most people that being OOS really doesn’t matter. As an NC native, I’d love to meet OOS people!

Also, UNC’s academics are just as good, in my opinion. It’s a top 5 public university that’s really cheap, so you can’t go wrong there.

I don’t know much about Northwestern, but I’ve heard it’s great, too. And Evanston is a great college town, but so is Chapel Hill.

I’d definitely visit both. What is your major?

i got no FA from northwestern (besides loans), and my mom’s a professor at UNC, so I was able to receive in state tuition.
And I have no idea what I want to major in–I’m interested in education, art, art history, pyschology, sociology, but really anything. I want to be able to explore and try out a bunch of different classes to see what I really want to do.

From a Northwestern double degree grad strongly supportive of the school -

Go to UNC.

By my estimate, $120,000 in extra costs after 4 years to go private to NU. Impossible to justify.

Carolina’s a great place and though large, is sized more like Cornell or USC than Wisconsin or UCLA. With in state tuition in play, possibly the best “bargain” in the country for the quality education and experience you’ll recieve.

Even if it’s a top 10 elite, no private or out-of-state school is worth it if you’re not getting ANY aid. You can do just fine while saving a LOT of money for graduate/professional school and learn just as much at your state school if you decide to give it your best shot.
