UNC vs. Rice

I only have a week to decide! :O

I'm a student from NJ and I have narrowed down my final choice to these two schools. I had been considering WashU, but I am pretty sure it is down to these two.

Rice pros:
-Small class sizes, 5:1 student:faculty ratio
-Immaculate campus
-Very good fit, based on overnight
-Student body is possibly a bit more uniformly high achieving
-Very nice dorms in the residential colleges
-Superb academics and job opportunities in bustling Houston

Rice cons:
-1500 miles from home
-Small student body could be claustrophobic
-Sports are DI but not that competitive (except in baseball)

UNC pros:
-Familiarity, parents went there
-Extended family living nearby in Hillsborough, Carrboro and Durham
-My family is moving to Cary after I graduate, so I would be close
-Due to my mom's new job at NC State, I qualify for in state tuition even though I am from out of state
-Amazing basketball and student life

UNC cons:
-Large class sizes
-Student body might be slightly less high achieving
-Campus is appealing but not as appealing to me
-82% North Carolinians, will I fit in?

Cost is not of concern to my family, but UNC would cost us $120,000 less over 4 years. I could potentially use this for graduate/professional programs. I sort of fell in love with Rice when I visited, but I'm an easily stressed person and I am really close with my family. It would be nice to go to school near them, as I have basically wanted to live in North Carolina my entire life and it could finally be a reality.

You have a really tough call, but it seems like you have two good options.

I wouldn’t worry about not fitting in at UNC (unless you are an international student), but Rice does have a higher-achieving, more diverse student body.

keepittoyourself why do you say unless you are an international student?

why cant international students fit in ?

Int’l students can absolutely fit in at UNC. We simply have fewer compared to other schools due to a self imposed limit on non NC students. That limit includes both other states and int’l students.

The number of international students at unc (non Canadian non exchange ndergraduates) is a rounding error.
