UNC vs UMD

I haven't really come across many threads comparing these 2 schools. UMD is my instate university, but I really want to attend UNC. My mom thinks that 2 are comparable and thus doesn't see the value in spending more on UNC, so I need some fire power to convince her otherwise :)

Thanks in advance!

I can understand your reluctance to stay in-state. My S faced a similar conundrum last year–UConn vs. UMD . At your age, there is a great desire to spread your wings. My S could have gone to UConn for 1/2 the in-state tuition (after merit aid), but chose UMD. Two reasons we supported his decision: merit aid @ UMD (while not making tuition as inexpensive as UConn) made going there affordable (loan free!), also they have a stronger Engineering program @ UMD. Here’s something to consider–would going to UNC cause a financial burden for yourself (student loans) or your parents? Also, how does each school compare with regard to your major? (And, FYI, my S is very happy @ UMD!)

Well my parents are divorced, so my parents split the tuition. My dad has no problem paying for UNC, however my mother does. I’m undecided in my major as I have so many interests such as business, environmental science, psychology, and politics. I’ll hear back about FA pretty soon, so hopefully UNC throws me some money!

I think my mom is just worried that UNC is 5 hours away and I know zero people there, so she’s afraid of me being isolated. However, I’m a really outgoing person and think that college is all about new experiences and growing as a person.

Well unless Dad wants to pay ALL the tuition (or the make up the difference) go to Maryland because your mom is right, there is no point in paying for a similar quality school. If Dad agrees (in writing) to pay the difference and has no loans to take out to do so, maybe you can ask.
