I just got accepted into UNC today off the waitlist. The college that I was supposed to be going to was UMD (in-state), honors program, 5000$ scholarship. UNC was one of my top choices, but since I got in so late I'd probably get worse housing and a worse orientation date (aka worse classes). Is it worth going to UNC?

it sucks that you wont get the money if you go to unc...it will cost you a lot more than MD, but as far as orientation goes classes are kept open so that orientation dates are pretty much equal as can be, and housing will still be available, probably at one the large south campus dorms that most frosh live in.

Even if you don't have housing available to you, you can go to Granville, which isn't terrible by any means. Some people love and prefer it.

I also think you'll be fine for CTOPS, did you even miss the deadline?

The financial stuff, though, I wish I could help you with. That's definitely something to sit down and talk with your family about. It should come down to the feel - was UNC your first choice? Do you have grad school plans? etc

Thanks! I actually didn't know that about orientation, so that was really helpful. The money situation is kind of a problem, but UNC was above UMD on my list of colleges so I'm more worried about the academics. I think I'm going into biochemistry: do you know if either program is better than the other in that field?

UNC is really strong in the sciences. I don't know about Maryland.

One of my best friends at school turned down a full ride to Maryland to go to UNC and constantly says he wouldn't change that decision for anything.

UNC is VERY strong in the sciences. I'd definitely say that UNC is above UMD within that discipline. Like Cloying said, you should really come down for a visit. That's what sealed it for me. The campus and people were too good to pass up.
