I want to start off by saying don’t pay attention to my username: I created this account a while ago.
I’ve narrowed my list down to these three colleges and I’m trying to decide which one to attend. I plan on studying business/finance.I’m in state for UNC and have received in state tuition for USC. I’m wondering if the slightly better business school at umich is worth the oos price tag. What do you guys think?
What is the total 4 year cost difference?
Are you planning to get a MBA at some point?
I’d say it is not even remotely worth it. UMich has a great business school, one of the best, however UNC for in state is too good to pass up - both in reputation and cost. Now if you were in another state, then maybe.
Yes i will get an MBA at some point. I would pay $113,208 more over four years to attend Umich. So would the Umich name be worth that amount?
No. Not at all. It’s not the name, but what the Ross school can do for you. But again, no. For some OOS perspective: My S was accepted to Michigan and deferred UNC, both OOS. If he is accepted at UNC, that will be a hard choice for him.
in general the conventional wisdom is go to the public school tuition in state school. so no to michigan IMHO.
nothing against michigan, if someone lived in Ann Arbor I’d say go instate tuition to UM rather than OOS tuition to UNC.
I also agree. Michigan is not worth the extra113K plus interest. MBA programs are expensive (often consider a cash cow for the school) and you will be self funding it. The extra debt from Michigan would make difficult.
Most people on this site recommend students borrowing no more than the federal limits for direct loans (roughly 30K).
Can you list net price for each ?
(tuition, fees, room, board) - (géants, scholarships) =
Also, are you a direct admit to Kennan Flagler ?
yes im a direct admit to KF.
UNC:$24,898
UMich$57,432
I was also accepted to UNC and USC’s Honors College with in-state tuition, although I did not apply to Michigan. I would 100% say go to UNC. I have met many successful alumni, engaged students, and even professors who truly reflect the exemplary nature of the school. I have heard amazing things about the academics and myriad of opportunities offered to UNC students. The value is tough to beat as well.
Both UMich and UNC are comparably excellent schools. I don’t think it’s worth paying an extra $113K to choose one over the other.
Note that $113K is probably 2/3rds or more of what you’ll need for an MBA.
Base on what you wrote, the difference is more than 130K not including interest (assuming loans) or lost investment income (assuming paying out of pocket) . Where would you get that amount of money? I only ask because if you are thinking loans then you will need a cosigner? Do you have someone that is will to do this?
Save the cash for your future MBA. Work hard and get the experience you need for a great MBA program. It will be a lot easier to do that if you do not have massive debt over your head. Without debt, you will have more options to explore opportunities without worrying about how much they pay.
Right now, the only real choice is USC Honors vs. UNC KF.
(Same the money for a Ross MBA - it will be MUCH more valuable than the minute difference between a KF and a Ross undergrad degrees).
What business major are you thinking of?
Any thought to a minor?
Did you get Honors at UNC?
What’s the net cost for your family at USC?
@MYOS1634 honors at UNC isn’t all that. you get no early registration for general classes, there are no special dorms, and many departments (depending on your interests) offer no or a single honors class. (single class meaning one semester a year the Math department has one honors class for example) So it’s not worth comparing UNC with vs without honors
I disagree… I’m in the honors college at UNC currently, and I think it’s quite valuable. Honors Carolina is an entirely different animal than it was four years ago, and it’s really quite amazing. They have lots of different seminars and training sessions for landing internships and getting into professional schools. There’s a comprehensive network of Honors Carolina alumni looking to recruit people from the honors program.
They have people on staff whose sole purpose it is to look over resumes, find internships, and conduct mock interviews for students. Honors Carolina is also going to add over a dozen business honors classes in the coming year, which is what the OP would be interested in.
The following companies/grad schools came to UNC just this fall to recruit exclusively at Honors Carolina:
Deloitte Consulting
Goldman Sachs
Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government
BMO Financial
The Boston Consulting Group
Teach for America
UNC School of Medicine
Honors Carolina is definitely worth consideration and should not be excluded from the decision. If the OP was not accepted to HC, however, you can still join the program as a freshman or a sophomore. That’s what I did.
a senior with near straight A GPA said the program is over-rated for those in physical, chemical sciences.
I think they are aware of the problems and are hoping to fix the lack of upper division honors classes for math, physics, chemistry, computer science by allowing “research” to count instead. I think it is highly dependent on area of interest… people need to look at the classes and if they find zero or one class offered by a department will have to do “research” if they hope to finish the program. The person in the program was planning to drop until advisors said they would count the research retroactively. she said something like this person below:
"Sophomore Kathryn Grace Almon said she has had trouble finding courses that fulfill requirements for both her major and Honors Carolina. Almon turned to the Honors Contract to satisfy this semester’s requirement. “I can’t just keep sacrificing three hours of my schedule to take something like Honors Mongolian Sheepherding,” Almon said. “I have to take STEM classes, and they don’t offer enough STEM classes.”

If you are thinking about international business, definitely consider South Carolina - Ranked #1.
That USC ranking was by US News & World Report for undergraduate programs. Very strong…

Update: I have preferred admission to the Ross business school as well
Update: been accepted into Ross business school under preferred admission
