So I'm trying to decide between UNC, Vanderbilt, and William & Mary. I liked all three so I can't figure out which to decide. I loved the school spirit & research opportunities at UNC (plus I'm in the Honors Program). I loved the academic possibilities and strong alumni connections at Vanderbilt and I loved the community at William & Mary. I was looking for some advice/ reasons to pick UNC. I'm a little worried about research opportunities and having enough classes to choose from at William & Mary. Plus, I'm concerned that Williamsburg might be too quiet. So if you have any information/input about this, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

What are you interested in academically?

i'm planning on majoring in biology & then going to medical school

According to what I was able to glean from taking a brief look at the website, bio is one of the largest majors at W & M. There are 23 faculty members and 65 courses listed in the current catalog. Vandy and UNC may well offer more, but 65 courses cover a lot of ground :) . W & M enjoys a particularly high med school placement rate - I've read between 75 and 80 percent, though I can't find the exact citation at the moment.

My oldest d was a double bio/government major at W & M. She loved the bio department, particularly the faculty, and couldn't say enough about her experience there. She had the opportunity to do research as a freshman, and there are indeed many research possibilities for undergrads in bio at W & M: W&M Biology | Biology

My middle d is at Vanderbilt and loves it. She's a classical languages/poli sci major, though, so I don't know much about the bio opportunities there. I'm sure they must be stellar, as Vandy's medical center is world-class.

Congrats on having 3 great choices. I think you'll be sufficiently challenged in bio, and find sufficient opportunities, wherever you go. At this point, you might want to think about where you've felt most comfortable on your visits, and what kind of surrounding community you want for the next 4 years. Williamsburg is a neat place, but certainly quieter than Nashville.

W&M has the highest med school acceptance rate of any school in VA. Not as loud of a social/Greek scene as at Vandy or UNC. Smaller community can be good for some, bad for others. Depends on what you are looking for. W&M is more LAC-type, excellent Bio for pre-med but if you change your mind, other depts are top notch and easy to switch lanes for a major. Good luck.

Never could figure out the downside of a college being too quiet!
