UNC vs Vandy

"Given the title of the thread and since you are apparently a Vanderbilt student, why don’t you do something positive and articulate the things about Vanderbilt that someone should know about Vanderbilt before making a decision to attend, both positive and negative"

great idea, pleaseeeeeeeee!

OC - What I posted is a DIRECT QUOTE from the Vanderbilt website regarding the class of 2010. Imho, Vanderbilt is parsing words to avoid quoting their acceptance rate and yield, and the result is a confusing statement. But is THEIR statement, not mine.

Check the link. Then simmer down.

Regarding Greek Life....my understanding is about 40-45% of the student body at Vandy go Greek. Nothing wrong with that, but it is quite a few people with a very homogeneous set of interests. So...honestly, it is what it is at Vanderbilt.

ldmom - I don't see the 13% anywhere listed on your link. After an internet search, Vanderbilt's yield rate is 38.5%. I've posted the link below for clarification.

http://www.vanderbilt.edu/divadm/finrprt2007/FY2007_Statistics.pdf

For the Class of 2006 --

Applied -- 12,189
Accepted -- 4,128
Enrolled -- 1,590
[Yield -- 38.5%; Selectivity -- 33.9%]

Statistics for admitted students (Class of 2012)--

23% overall admit rate (Regular and Early Decision I & II combined)
SAT middle 50%: (CR & M) 1380 - 1540
ACT middle 50%: 31-34
92% of all admitted students were in the top ten percent of their high school's graduating class

Vanderbilt has several hundred clubs on campus. Also -- while Vanderbilt attracts students from around the world, the vast majority of UNC students are in state.

Finally, please tell me how all of these clubs are getting filled if Vanderbilt has a ** "very homogeneous set of interests" **

** Doesn't sound like a "homogenous set of interests" to me...... **

I think she was trying to say that 13% of the applicants enrolled... But that's just me.

I am QUOTING word for word what is at my first link OC. For pete's sake, I actually did a copy/paste.

Click on the link

Scroll down until you see the section "Who are Vanderbilt Undergraduates?"

Scroll past the table, to the section with the title in bold, titled "Admission and Enrollment Rates"

The first sentence is (again, copy/paste) "Of the 12,192 students who applied to Vanderbilt, about 13% of them enrolled as new freshmen."

I did not quote acceptance or yield rates. Perhaps you are not reading carefully and getting yourself upset over nothing.

And look, say what you will and list all the clubs you want, but 40-45% is a substantial part of the student body participating in one activity. And since I dated and married a frat guy, and not much has changed since then, I can honestly and accurately say, the fraternity/sorority experience has a pretty predictable pattern or theme. Mixers, formals, community service projects, open parties, closed parties...nothing much new about that.

I'm NOT saying it's a BAD experience...I'm saying there is predictability and similarity within the system and, I am saying, again, that 40-45% is SUBSTANTIAL participation. This IS a factor that should be considered by prospective students.

Furthermore, with regard to diversity, I believe, like most Southern colleges, Vandy's sororities and fraternities are not racially integrated. (Correct me if I am wrong about this.)

^If theoc89 had bothered to look at the first link provided by ldmom06, in Post No. 12, he might have reached the same conclusion.

theoc89, with respect to you last post you miss the point of what ldmom06 was saying. ^If theoc89 had bothered to look at the first link provided by ldmom06, in Post No. 12, he might have reached the same conclusion.

With respect to you last post. I think you miss the point of what ldmom06 was saying. She was referring only to the social culture of the school. A student body can be relatively homogenous in some respects (i.e. socially) while individuals still have variety of other individual interests. In fact, I would not be surprised to find that fraternity and sorority members are some of the more active participants in campus activities. If it is not now the case, it certainly was a number of years ago.

It would be interesting to know why Vanderbilt's applications took such a big jump. Most schools applications seem to be on the rise, but a one year increase of over 30% is remarkable. It will be interesting to see if this year is an anomaly or if the same or a greater number of applications are received next year. There is really no historical precedent at Vanderbilt for such an increase.

Ldmom06, looks like we cross-posted. Sorry.

Applications jumped at Vanderbilt because the school is becoming very popular in other regions of the country. I'm from New York and was the first student from my HS to go. My school is sending four kids to Vandy next year (partly due to my raving about it). The majority of Vanderbilt students are now from areas outside of the south. Word of mouth is powerful.

Also, since diversity has increased alot more ethnic groups want to come. When Vanderbilt had a low Jewish population (2%), not many top Jewish students applied. But now that it has risen to around 12% (in only 3 years), theres a tremendous snowball effect.

The school also has great academics, small classroom sizes, professors who care (I've eaten lunch with my teachers), and lots of school spirit. I could go on and on........

I didn't see that I'd ruffled feathers until just now!

TheOC, I didn't mean to offend you or your school. I mean, man, both my parents went there! And they loved it! I probably didn't tout that enough. I also wasn't clear enough. I didn't say that it was "greek life only," but that (and I was rushing while I said this so it DID sound like I was saying that) a lot of the people who I have met - friends, family, brothers' friends there, students I met at Vanderbilt, etc - HAVE said that it is hard to escape greek life at Vanderbilt. I mean, at UNC we're just 18% greek and I still feel like that's a little too much for me. One of my best friends from high school got a full tuition scholarship at Vanderbilt and ended up turning it down for a full ride to Furman because he was afraid of greek life. Then he ended up joining a frat at Furman... go figure.

Anyway, I don't want to get into a ****ing contest about whether or not our professors care more or if we have more school spirit. I'm not even going to touch school spirit. Vanderbilt is an excellent school - ranked higher than UNC - but that doesn't mean that UNC isn't great, either. Not even 5% of our classes are over one hundred students, and admissions here are highly competitive. I've gone to my professors' houses, eaten lunch and dinner with them, blah blah blah. It's not like that's something that is incapable of happening here. I guess it's fair game because I don't have first hand experience there for you to say our classes are huge, etc because I said what I did. Anyway, just wanted to clear the air a bit.
