UNC vs WASHU

Duke’s opportunities are only one of the reasons that Duke students tend to make it big more often.

First, children of Duke alums are much more likely to go there because they’re more likely to get in with their legacy and they have an instilled hatred of UNC. They can also probably pay for it.
Second, they are more likely to come from a wealthy household where their parents have connections. It’s not like Duke gives them all the connections that they’ll use forever. They are very likely to use their parents connections just as much.
Third, coming from a wealthy family, they are likely to have been pushed to be much more academically competitive and have to live up to a certain standard. They probably want to make it big more to be wealthy so they can live like their parents do.

I’m not saying that UNC is better than Duke. I know that Duke is better academically, but it’s not like you’re going to get an inferior education at UNC. There are a lot of reasons that students choose to go to Duke over UNC, and it’s not purely academics or opportunities. Plenty of UNC grads make it big. Like Polobear said, your education and what you do with college is what you make of it. I think that the people who make it big from UNC are probably more grateful and take it for granted less because they had to work for it and had more drive than their peers rather than being handed a lot of things from Duke.

Lesson to learn here is that if you want to be successful and you have the money to flaunt, take it to the institution that will allow you to feel the most successful and accomplished. In our economy and in this century, sadly it is not about WHAT YOU KNOW but WHO YOU KNOW that matters. So if Duke opens you to a network of wealthy and powerful figures that lay the foundation for a successful future, go there. If you want to work hard and not necessarily achieve to your fullest potential, go to UNC.

Private education produces more extrinsic rewards in the LONG RUN than a public school.

I’m not biased, I’m just telling the truth and how it is.

All my friends at Duke are going to Ivy league schools for their MA. Everyone at UNC I know is scrounging for a job or getting into professional schools, such as medical school.
